  • Plutonium is a rare transuranic radioactive element with the Atomic symbol Pu, and the Atomic number 94. It is an Actinide metal with a silvery-white appearance that tarnishes when exposed to air, much like Thorium. It will form a dull coating when oxidized. It reacts with carbon, halogens, nitrogen and silicon. When exposed to moist air, it forms oxides and hydrides that expand the sample up to 70% in volume. It is also a radioactive poison that accumulates in bone marrow. This makes the handling of plutonium dangerous.

  • The element known as "Plutonium" in the United States was named "Jovium" by Confederate physicist Henderson V. FitzBelmont during the Second Great War. Three of the Confederate States' leading experts in Jovium extraction, Dean, Martin, and Collins, were all killed by a United States air strike on Washington University in 1943, and the fourth, Delancey, was badly wounded. In Great Britain, this element was named "Churchillium", in honour of Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

  • Plutonium is a transuranic radioactive chemical element with the chemical symbol Pu and atomic number 94. It was used in the first version of the DeLorean time machine to create the nuclear energy needed (1.21 gigawatts) to create temporal displacement. One pellet of plutonium covered one trip. Dr. Emmett Brown obtained the plutonium from a group of Libyan terrorists who raided a power plant earlier that month, giving them the assurance that he would build them a bomb with it. However, he sent them an empty bomb casing comprised of used pinball machine parts instead. This drove the Libyans to send a team out to Twin Pines Mall to kill him. Dispensing the plutonium into the DeLorean required donning a full radiation suit and rotating the container (which encased a pellet of the deadly element within a red liquid) over a slot. Once the pellet was sucked into the flux capacitor, the process was complete and it was safe to remove the radiation suit. Doc was preparing to travel 25 years into the future when he realized that he had left the case of extra plutonium in his truck ("How did I ever expect to get back? One pellet, one trip, I must be out of my mind!"), and was preparing to get it when the Libyans arrived to exact their revenge. Thus, the extra plutonium was not taken with Marty McFly as he accidentally traveled to 1955 while escaping the Libyans. After arriving at Lyon Estates, the roentgen meter measured empty and Marty was forced to hide the DeLorean until he found Doc in 1955. Plutonium was not readily available in 1955 or 1985. In 1985, Marty remarked to Doc that "You don't just walk into a store and buy plutonium!", while in 1955, young Doc noted that while he's certain that it will be for sale "in every corner drugstore" in 1985, "Here in 1955, it's a little hard to come by." Doc and Marty settled on an alternate plan, by channeling a bolt of lightning into the flux capacitor. After their plan succeeded and Marty saved Doc from being killed by the terrorists, Doc traveled to 2015 where he upgraded the time machine from plutonium to Mr. Fusion which only required garbage to produce nuclear fusion rather than fission.

Sebastian also gave the metal to King Edward and Queen Edith in the form of an exquisitely crafted necklace that was claimed to have been made from a brand new metal that was warm to touch, in an attempt to kill the king and queen. Sebastian then planned to assault the castle with this dangerous element. (AUDIO: Seasons of Fear) File:ScienceStub.png

It is also a radioactive poison that accumulates in bone marrow. These and other properties make the handling of plutonium dangerous. The most important isotope of plutonium is plutonium-239, with a half-life of 24,100 years. Plutonium-239 and 241 are fissile, meaning the nuclei of their atoms can break apart by being bombarded by slow moving thermal neutrons, releasing energy, gamma radiation and more neutrons. It can therefore sustain a nuclear chain reaction, leading to applications in nuclear weapons and nuclear reactors. Plutonium is the heaviest naturally occurring or primordial element; the most stable isotope of plutonium is plutonium-244, with a half-life of about 80 million years. Plutonium-238 has a half-life of 88 years and emits alpha particles. It is a heat source in radioisotope thermoelectric generators, which are used to power some spacecraft. Plutonium-240 has a high rate of spontaneous fission, raising the neutron flux of any sample it is contained in. The presence of plutonium-240 effectively limits a sample's weapon potential and determines its grade.

Three of the Confederate States' leading experts in Jovium extraction, Dean, Martin, and Collins, were all killed by a United States air strike on Washington University in 1943, and the fourth, Delancey, was badly wounded. In the spring of 1944, Clarence Potter and a group of Confederate operatives with perfect U.S. accents transported a Jovium-bomb, made with assistance from Britain, to the west side of Philadelphia. The bomb went off and destroyed part of the city, prompting quick U.S. atomic reprisals on the C.S. ports of Newport News and Charleston. After the war, Potter was put on trial for his use of U.S. uniforms in aiding his attack on Philadelphia, but was found not guilty. In Great Britain, this element was named "Churchillium", in honour of Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

It is an actinide metal of silvery-gray appearance that tarnishes when exposed to air, and forms a dull coating when oxidized. The element normally exhibits six allotropes and four oxidation states. It reacts with C , halogens, N , Si and H . When exposed to moist air, it forms oxides and hydrides that expand the sample up to 70% in volume, which in turn flake off as a powder that can spontaneously ignite. It is radioactive and can accumulate in bones. These properties make the handling of plutonium dangerous. A team led by Glenn T. Seaborg and Edwin McMillan at the University of California, Berkeley, first synthesized plutonium in 1940 by bombarding uranium-238 with deuterons. Plutonium is the heaviest primordial element by virtue of its most stable isotope, plutonium-244, whose half-life of about 80 million years is just long enough for the element to be found in trace quantities in nature. Plutonium is mostly a byproduct of nuclear reactions, where some of the neutrons released by the fission process convert uranium-238 nuclei into plutonium. Both plutonium-239 and plutonium-241 are fissile, meaning that they can sustain a nuclear chain reaction, leading to applications in nuclear weapons and nuclear reactors. Plutonium-240 exhibits a high rate of spontaneous fission, raising the neutron flux of any sample containing it. The presence of plutonium-240 limits a plutonium sample's usability for weapons or its quality as reactor fuel, and the percentage of plutonium-240 determines its grade (weapons-grade, fuel-grade, or reactor-grade). Plutonium-238 has a half-life of 88 years and emits alpha particles. It is a heat source in radioisotope thermoelectric generators, which are used to power some spacecraft. Plutonium isotopes are expensive and inconvenient to separate, so particular isotopes are usually manufactured in specialized reactors. Producing plutonium in useful quantities for the first time was a major part of the Manhattan Project during World War II, which developed the first atomic bombs. The Fat Man bombs used in the Trinity nuclear test in July 1945, and in the bombing of Nagasaki in August 1945, had plutonium cores. Human radiation experiments studying plutonium were conducted without informed consent, and several criticality accidents, some lethal, occurred after the war. Disposal of plutonium waste from nuclear power plants and dismantled nuclear weapons built during the Cold War is a nuclear-proliferation and environmental concern. Other sources of plutonium in the environment are fallout from numerous above-ground nuclear tests, now banned.
