As Darth Krayt came to power following the fall of the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances and the Coup of Coruscant, Nikolay was given the rank of vice admiral. At the same time, he was granted command of the Imperial Seventh Fleet. However, service in Darth Krayt's Galactic Empire was a bad experience for him. Nikolay was disliked by the Sith for opposing every policy they adopted, and during a purge of the Navy, intervened and saved the lives of many officers. Finally, several years into the Second Imperial Civil War, he defected to the Empire-in-exile.
