He played five seasons with the St. Paul Saints of the American Hockey Association from 1938 to 1942. In 1942 he was called up again to the Boston Bruins. Boyd played 20 games for them in 1942-43 and 5 in 1943-44. He then finished off his career with the Providence Reds and retired in 1945. He was the head coach of the Reds from 1944-45 until he was replaced mid-season in 1946-47. In the NHL Boyd scored 10 goals and 10 assists in 97 games.
