Hettelock, Quant Suff, and a third, unnamed scientific worker were sent along to aid Diligence's caravan when they traveled back toward The Wheel. When the group was ambushed by Lord Grott's soldiers, Hettelock and the others came running into Diligence's wagon while the soldiers fought. With his round face pinched with anxiety, he wondered if the enemy would slaughter them as well. The group was taken prisoner, and when the candlemen slaughtered Lord Grott's in the night, they were taken to the hearthstone to be sacrificed, only surviving because of the appearance of the Tinderboy. They were soon flown back to the crystal palace by Eil do Mer and Jassad Attqua.
