abstract
  • The Netherworld is the main setting of Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten. Unlike other Netherworlds, this one has a President instead of an Overlord and takes the appearance of being ruled by a democratic body known as the Corrupternment, though in reality, the President is an Overlord in all but name, wielding control over the Netherworld until they are defeated or step down. The Netherworld is multi-layered, with each layer holding different levels of Demons, the highest ranking demons living in luxery in a snowy graveyard, middle class demons living in an amusement park, low level demons living in a desert, and prisoners and Prinnies living in the lowest level of the Netherworld, Hades. At the time of Disgaea 4, unbeknownst to all but the heads of the Corrupterment, the lack of Fear Energy from the human world has caused the Netherworld to suffer, and the demons within have gradually been growing weaker. In response to this, the Corrupternment is forced to take drastic measures to prolong the Netherworld's destruction, leading to the Prinny Instructor Valvatorez's rebellion. At the beginning of Disgaea 4, the President is Death King Hugo, though due to the Netherworld's current state, he is forced to relent power to Judge Nemo. Hugo is defeated by Valvatorez, who quickly dismisses the title of President in order to focus on fighting Nemo, allowing Axel to become President. After the events of the game, Hugo's son Emizel becomes President and wipes all records of Axel's reign.
