  • In 2287 the Exeter, under the command of Admiral Stephanoff, was on patrol in the sector near to Tau Gamma II. Stephanoff was contacted by Commander Hikaru Sulu aboard the USS Enterprise-A and informed that Captain James T. Kirk and several officers had been captured by the notorious bounty hunter, Sweeney, and that back-up was needed. Shortly after the Exeter arrived in orbit of Tau Gamma II with the USS Avenger and the USS Daran, and together they battled Sweeney's ships alongside the Enterprise. Thankfully, Captain Kirk was able to engineer his own escape from Sweeney's ship and the battle was soon finished, with no damage or casualties aboard the Exeter. (TOS comics: "Going, Going...", "... Gone!")

Gone!") In early 2288 the Exeter, now under the command of Captain Lawrence Styles, was assigned to transport agricultural equipment to the Kristenians to end the food crisis that their world had been experiencing. Following the completion of that mission, Admiral Karl Tomlinson ordered Styles to take the Exeter to the planet Karimea and take possession of the experimental Lamver unit from the USS Enterprise-A, and perform the testing of the device himself as James T. Kirk had postponed it to travel to Karimea. (TOS - The Return of the Worthy comics: "Great Expectations!", "Tomorrow Never Knows!") The Exeter was refit to uprated specifications on stardate 2/2601 and then again (to the Enterprise mark IV modification) on stardate 2/3309. By the early 2300s the Exeter was decommissioned, having been scrapped on stardate 2/5001. The vessel was succeeded by a new Excelsior-class ship bearing the name Exeter.
