- Easterling Kataphrakts, or Cataphracts, are heavy cavalry - nigh unstoppable killing machines that will sweep enemy cavalrymen from their saddles and ride down unprepared foot soldiers like a scythe through wheat. They are the elite of the Great Eastern Army, and an enemy general should be wary of their devastating charges.
- The Cataphract was a crude attempt by the Mesan Alignment to duplicate the multi-drive missiles in use by the Star Empire of Manticore and the Republic of Haven, based on Solarian shipkillers with the addition of an anti-missile drive to the final stage. The resulting missiles were twenty percent longer than standard size of the shipkillers they were based on and had half the lasing rods and less powerful seekers, ECM, and penaids. The tradeoff in power gave them a powered range from rest of almost 16.6 million kilometers. (CS2, HH12)
- Cataphracts are a type of heavy cavalry historically employed by various peoples and empires in western Eurasia and the eurasian steppe, such as the Persian Empire, from which it was adopted by the Byzantines, eventually forming the basis of the equipment and purpose of the Knights of germanic Europe. The historical cataphract was armed with a two-handed Xyston (or Kontos), while directing his mount with his knees. Both horse and rider were armed in Chain mail. An even heavier type of cavalry employed by the Persians was the Clibanarius.
