Ernster, a fourth-year free agent, was with the team in training camp, but released on Aug. 30, 2008, when the Steelers decided to keep Berger as a replacement for injured Daniel Sepulveda. Berger averaged 41.9 yards in eight games this season, but he had punts of 27, 32 and 35 yards against the Washington Redskins.
