Synopsis
  • At the Arlington National Cemetery Stalker and Snake-Eyes are confronted by Fred II who tells them he is Wade Collins, their fellow Long Range Recon Patrol comrade whom they left for dead in Vietnam but survived and since had plastic surgery that has made him into a Fred clone. He takes at gun point to his car and makes Snake-Eyes drive. As they head for New York he explains that they left him, Dickie Saperstein and Ramon Escobedo for dead. Dickie and Ramon were and Stalker thought Wade was as well. Wade explains: :The six man patrol were creeping through a valley in the jungle when someone stepped on a twig. Wade was walking point so angry as he was most likely to get shot at first. He was distracted by this and wandered into a Vietcong ambush. The patrol returned fire but Ramon and Wade were both hit and Dickie trod on a landmine. The others escaped but didn't take Wade with them. The Vietcong did and took him to a tunnel under a village where a surgeon dug the bullets out of him. He then spent two years in a prison camp. He curses the others for not finishing him off. Outside Springfield Candy's car has broken down. She hails a lift from another car that passes, driven by Curt who drinks a "special" coffee. Inside Springfield Buzzer leaps off a train and walks into town to find it deserted. Suddenly Firefly appears on a Ferret, together with a new Cobra operative called Scrap-Iron, and tells him to keep quiet. Inside the town police station the Soft Master has knocked out all but one of the police officers and makes the only one conscious access the computer to retrieve information on the Hard Master's murder. He also advises against reaching for the pistol at his ankle. Outside the town Candy discovers the Soft Master's suitcase is still in the care. Chuck suddenly remembers it was left by his previous passenger and Candy suggests he goes back to return it. She also pours herself a cup of coffee. On the road to New York Wade tells how he came home when the war ended and immediately on arrival in New York a female hippy spat in his face and called him a baby killer. Then his wife's lawyer arrived with divorce papers. He also found it hard to get a job with many employers refusing to take vets on. He took to wandering the United States and came to a small town where he saw a poster for Cobra. They took him in and gave him rank, influence, respect and power so he felt he belonged. When the Crimson Guard unit was formed he had plastic surgery and became a "Fred" like others. He was then sent to replace Fred Broca and took over his family. Stalker argues that Cobra are just using him and there are other options open to him. At the Springfield police station the Soft Master has found the information he sought. Suddenly more police officers burst in. The Soft Master charges through them and makes it outside, seen by Firefly, Scrap-Iron and Buzzer, and steals a police car. Outside Springfield Billy is hitch-hiking with two nuns who note he is a boy at peace with himself. They drop him by the road and he hails Chuck's approaching car. Meanwhile the Soft Master takes off with the Ferret in pursuit. Firefly launches a missile but the Soft Master speeds the police car under a chicken lorry, knocking off the car's hood, with the missile destroying the lorry. Meanwhile Candy has discovered that Chuck's coffee is almost entirely brandy. She suggests she take over the wheel but Chuck argues he's sober enough to drive. Meanwhile Billy sees a vision of the Grim Reaper striking the car. The Soft Master sees a level crossing with a freight training heading along the tracks. He speeds past the train just before it blocks the road, and passes Chuck's car where Candy is trying to correct the steering. Suddenly the car crashes into the train and catches fire. The train keeps the pursuing Cobra agents on the other side of the tracks but Scrap-Iron climbs a telegraph pole. The Soft Master looks back and sees Chuck's car on fire with three people trapped inside and turns back to save them. Scrap-Iron sees the Soft Master trying to open the car door and fires a missile. The Soft Master sees it and leaps in the way to save the others. Scrap-Iron asks Firefly what to do about the others. Firefly gives a thumbs down and Scrap-Iron fires another missile, destroying the car. On Staten Island Wade calls the Broca family into the room and tells them that Stalker and Snake-Eyes are his friends - real friends. "A real friend will tell you when you're being stupid and that's what I've been. A fool who was used by Cobra and was too dense to now a good thing when he had it..." He reminds them that he isn't Fred Broca but burnt out Wade Collins. Stalker and Snake-Eyes had almost convinced him to ask the family to come away with him to somewhere that Cobra couldn't find them, but even though he'd be the happiest man of Earth he can't ask them as they deserve something better than a substitute they never asked for and didn't want He says goodbye and heads out the door. But then Sean calls "Dad!" Crying Wade turns as the family tells him they will come with him. They board the car and drive off. Stalker tells Snake-Eyes that they could have taken Wade in for debriefing and discovered many Cobra secrets, but equally they could have brought him out of the valley and he wouldn't have had so many wasted years, and they owed him that much. Snake-Eyes concurs.

  • Crossroads, formerly known as T-28 Delta Bootis and known officially as the Federal Capitalist Colony of Crossroads, was a planet (actually a Forerunner-made shield world) located in the Theta Artemis System of the Second Rim. One of the twelve planets in its bustling system, it would grow into a mighty military stronghold following the Human-Covenant War, even surpassing the feats of Reach. One of the more notable ventures of human ingenuity was the massive Owens Shipyard, a privately owned shipyard that produced vessels of both NaTech and Reyes-McLees design. Capable of producing two cruisers and six frigates/destroyers within a month, its behemoth size could only be desired by rivals of its time.

  • Crossroads was a Santa Cruz venue (1976-1978) located at 303 Potrero #25. Owned by Richard "Spanky" Spachner, the venue catered mostly to blues and rock music. There were a few punk and new wave shows there. Because of financial problems, noise complaints and pressure from the landlord, Crossroads closed shop for good on November 25, 1978. On June 23 and June 24, 1978, Crossroads hosted The Readymades, The Mutants, and The Avengers. The Dils were also scheduled to play on the 24th, but they didn't make it, so the Avengers played all night. The shows were organized by Third Reef Productions. According to a write-up in the Good Times, about 130 people attended the June 24 show. In spite of the turn out, the evenings turned Spanky against having more "New Wave" shows at his venue. He cited noise complaints, "the rowdy flavor" and too many underage kids trying to get in as reasons. However, later in the year, more punk/new wave shows took place at Crossroads. Seeing the possibility of a money-maker, Crossroads tried to have New Wave Night every Monday. The idea was unsuccessful, however, and Monday nights soon became reserved for dart tournaments.
  • The Crossroads is the largest Horde town in the Barrens, aptly named for the crossing of the main north-south road (from the Gold Road) and the road from Ratchet in the east all the way to the Stonetalon Mountains in the west. Combined with its central location and the Wyvern flight routes, the Crossroads offers access to nearly all Horde outposts in Kalimdor. As such, this small crossing is the usually the first place you will see large gatherings of players outside of Orgrimmar or Thunder Bluff. In addition to the numerous Horde players that gather there, Crossroads attracts its fair share of Alliance players as well. Within striking distance of Ashenvale to the north, and the port of Ratchet to the east, it is not uncommon to find an all out war happening outside one of the entrances of Crossroads on a daily basis. Larger scale Alliance assaults tend to occur during peak server population periods. (Between 4 PM and around midnight.) The area outside the inn also serves as an informal practice ground for PvP, and offers a good place for lower level Horde players to cut their teeth, as these are skills that they will likely need when facing the Alliance in more sparsely populated, remote regions later on.

  • Zoë Castillo reappears - not in Stark, as she had hoped, but in a twilight swamp. There are piers and rough buildings, made from grounded boats, erected nearby: clearly people live here, but Zoë is alone. As she makes her way across the platforms, a red firework like a signal flare goes overhead. Zoë watches it, then sees several figures on a pier at a distance. One of them looks familiar: she calls to April. We go back a few minutes: elsewhere in the Swamp City, April is speaking to the Captain beside his boat, having just disembarked. April is quietly angry at herself. The supplies got through, but Benrime Salmin has been taken by the Azadi. April wants to tear down the Azadi Tower. The Captain just marvels at her capacity for revenge. As April goes through the city, she speaks to Kara and asks for just a few people – enough to mount a rescue mission for Benrime. Kara refuses to throw away more lives on April's crusade. Despondent, April wanders the city, looking at the starflies that gather over the houses. As she walks she is surprised to see Na'ane, who says she escaped Marcuria by another route. Strangely subdued, she tells April a visitor from the city wants to speak to her on one of the piers. April agrees to meet this stranger. April cautions that if this man has information she will go back and rescue Benrime, and she'll need help - Na'ane says she would not let April go alone. As April mounts the pier, she sees a red flare go overhead: shaking her head over the celebrations getting out of hand, she walks on. She arrives, then turns in surprise to see her 'visitor'. Again, we go back a few minutes: Kian Alvane, dressed as one of the Rebels, is lingering outside one of the houses, unmarked. As he waits, he sees a red flare overhead, puzzles over it briefly, then continues on his way. He is surprised by the obvious care the Rebels have for each other. He meets Na'ane and speaks to her, asking she fulfil her part of the bargain. Na'ane tells him the Scorpion is waiting for him on the pier. Kian goes on his way. April turns to see her visitor is the Azadi soldier she met outside Friar's Keep. Horrified, she thinks she has led an infiltrator right to their camp. Kian is shocked to see her. Moved, he gives an impassioned speech: his time in the Northlands has opened his eyes. He believes the Goddess has led him on a unique path, that She has led him to April, a woman not afraid to speak her mind and tell him the truth. He says he wants to return to Sadir, and tell the Six that what is happening here is wrong. Finally, April listens to him, convinced of his honour - at least enough to tell him her name. But she's confused: why did Na'ane say that Kian had information for her? Suddenly, overhead, Azadi Cloudships - battleships - appear over the Swamp City. As April and Kian watch, horrified, ropes drop from the ships and soldiers begin climbing down. Among them is Commander Vamon, who sweeps across to Kian in triumph. He finally has proof positive that Kian has defected and betrayed his people. Kian orders Vamon to stop: the Rebels are civilians, women, children. Vamon is more interested in knowing if Kian has finally found his target - Kian says he had come to find the Scorpion but was led to April instead. April whispers the name, 'Scorpion' - the name the Azadi gave to her, after she had killed so many. Thinking he brought the soldiers here and was buying time, her tentative trust in Kian is shattered. Vamon orders Kian to kill April. He has several possible responses, but finally refuses to do it. Vamon nods to one of his soldiers, who stabs April in the stomach with his halberd. She staggers back and falls from the pier. Furious, Kian turns on Vamon, who arrests him - and thanks him, for leading the Azadi right to the rebel hideout. Vowing revenge, Kian is taken away as Vamon orders the destruction of the Swamp City. Watching in horror, Zoë can do nothing to help... then a large hand is put over her mouth. Chawan pulls her quietly into one of the huts, away from the battle. As Brynn frets over April's death, Chawan counsels escape, to fight another day. But Zoë cannot come with them, it's too dangerous. Remembering what happened to Zoë before, Chawan pours a magic sedating powder on the fire, and tells her to inhale the fumes. Zoë tries, but it doesn't seem to work. She begins to panic, then suddenly vanishes, as abruptly as she did at the Dark People's Library. As Azadi soldiers start hammering on the door, Chawan tells Brynn they must escape, but as the scene blacks out, we hear the door break and Brynn's desperate battle cry "For Raven!!" while Chawan shouts "No!" • Crossroads is a 2002 comedy-drama road film directed by Tamra Davis and starring American recording artist Britney Spears, Zoe Saldana and Taryn Manning. Written by Shonda Rhimes, the film tells the coming of age story of Lucy (Spears) and her childhood best friends Kit (Saldana) and Mimi (Manning) as they take a cross-country road trip, finding themselves and their friendship in the process. The film also stars Dan Aykroyd as Lucy's father, Kim Cattrall as Lucy's mother, and Anson Mount as Ben. The film was rated PG-13 in the United States due to sexual content and brief teen drinking. The script for the film was developed specifically for the singer by herself and her team. Filming began in March 2001, taking place in Spears' home state, Louisiana, as well as Los Angeles, California. Crossroads received generally unfavorable reviews from contemporary critics, who considered it a "dull road trip" film. The film received a total of twelve award nominations. It won two, however, for Worst Actress and Worst Original Song at the 23rd Golden Raspberry Awards. Despite being panned by critics, Crossroads grossed $5.2 million on its opening day, debuting at number two on the Box Office, just behind John Q.

A vital strategical point for Horde forces, the Crossroads remain a well guarded base camp but unlike any fortified outposts, orientated more towards trade and social interaction than military action. • Gell Mikin enters the foyer of Vozhd Keep, pausing in the entryway to run a hand over his bald pate. He glances around at the portraits as he awaits recognition by a servant or other dweller in the estate. It's afternoon at Vozhd Keep, and for some curious reason there don't actually seem to be alot of servants about. Also, being afternoon at Vozhd Keep, the Duke is just getting up. Wrapped in a heavy fur robe to shield from the cold of the stone walls, he yawns bearishly. After rubbing his eyes, he notices Gell for the first time. Wuh? "Good..." he looks to the windows, "... afternoon, Lord Mikin. The servants must be at Temple; I apologize that no one greeted you. I thought I'd have been up by now." He reaches the foot of the stairs and bows respectfully to the Emperor's Hawk. "I have only just arrived, so you have no need to apologize," the Surrector replies with a faint smile, lacing his fingers together. "The Emperor warned of my coming, I believe." Markus Kahar smiles, nodding as he gestures to the Mastery, "Indeed he did, however had I known you'd have arrived today, I'd have prepared a meal. The servants will be back in a few minutes, in the mean time, please do me the honour of joining me in the mastery. I'll boil us some mulled wine to take the chill off our backs." "Of course," Gell Mikin says, moving to step into the mastery. Dark silk banners hang from the ceiling, rippling slowly in the cold breeze that circulates through the cavernous hall. The ceiling of the mastery is lofty and steeped. The apex of the arch is composed of distorted glass - the portion facing the rising sun actually being a large decorative plate depicting a golden wildcat against a resplendent purple corona. The remainder of the banners drape down the walls of the room, offsetting pale marble statues with a bluish hue. An enormous fireplace dominates the front of the room near the entrance, while the back is dedicated to the master's throne. Centered on a tiered dais a cubit higher then the surrounding floor, the throne of Vozhdya is composed entirely of stone. Crafted directly in to the flooring itself, it's decorated with gold filigree and precious gems. Flanking the throne on either side are two unique statues: one, an exact replica of a wolfhound, curled and sleeping, and the other, a bear - also in repose - with its head resting on its paws. Closer inspection reveals that the hound is made entirely of silver and the bear of amber. Situated in a half-circle before the dais are five fine half-thrones, similar to the Royal seat but lesser in stature and ornament. A large table is situated in the center of the room, covered with various map-scrolls. "Your keep remains one of the finest in the realm, despite the troubles of Vozhdya's past, with the Wildlings," the Surrector opines as he regards the fluttering banners before settling into a chair in front of the blazing fireplace. Markus Kahar follows the Hawk in, closing the door quietly behind him. The Duke gestures to one of the plush red-velvet biinwood thrones as he moves to the large hearth. His twin hounds perk their heads up at the new arrival, but a reassuring pat-pat from the Duke sends them back to sleep. A large pot of wine bubbles on the stove, and from a small box the Duke plucks a healthy pinch of mull-spice. An aroma of sugar, cinnamon and clove briefly wafts through the room. "It is and it is not. These stones are hollow; I would prefer a much smaller keep if I could have a better family. One that would not force you to make such a trip in the cold. Here," he re-approaches the man holding a goblet, "... enjoy. To the Light." Gell Mikin gratefully accepts the goblet. He takes a sip, then nods his approval before saying, "To the Light." He smiles wearily. "Your blood may not be the problem in this affair. His choice of wife, on the other hand, seems quite the likely suspect. How much do you know about her?" Markus Kahar takes a welcoming sip, letting the warm liquid flow down his throat and warm his blood. Sitting himself beside the Hawk, he nods, "Dianna is not a bad girl. She has a good soul. She has always showed respect before me. However she is young and impetious, and I think a little bored here. She doesn't seem to have much self-control or very good judgement, but this again may be a result of her youth. If I'd never actually spoken to her, I would've suspected that she hated her husband for all the ways she's made his life more difficult, but she's shed tears over him twice. We all make mistakes when we're young, though admittedly, few as catastrophic as hers." "You do not think she bears the Shadow's Touch?" the Emperor's Hawk inquires. He rotates the goblet slowly in his hands. "Might she not have ensorceled both these men into such compromising behavior?" Markus Kahar arches a brow, "That truly surprised me. Many women cheat on their husbands, though few with a lowly guardsmen. However, infidelity does not a Shadowtouch suggest. She's never done anything in front of me that would ever suggest such a thing, nor have I ever heard anything along those lines. As angry as I may have been at her, I cannot say I've ever detected the tendrils of Shadow eminating from her." "I speak not merely of infidelity, but also of your nephew's troubles with the Church of True Light," Gell Mikin says somberly. He takes a sip from his goblet, then continues: "If he goes before the patronage of the Church with only the excuse of flying off the handle about his wife's affair, then I fear that Lord Adaer will suffer dearly and your house - the House of your Emperor - will remain scandalized. So, think carefully on this before speaking with such certainty." Markus Kahar shakes his head, his face downcast. "My nephew is young. What he did was stupid. What all three did was stupid. I will plead with the church myself; truly, this is my responsibility as it happened in my Township. However, I am not young, and will neither lie to my Emperor or the Emperor's Hawk. While she may very well *be* Shadow-Touched, I have never experienced that from her. I have never seen any evidence in her action to suggest it. All three just made terrible mistakes. Light Willing, the Church will have mercy." Gell Mikin sets his goblet on a side table, then leans toward Markus, speaking softly against the backdrop of crackling flames and popping logs. "The Church takes an exceedingly dim view of being abused in this fashion, Lord Markus. The Church will show no mercy to your nephew. It cannot afford to, lest its credibility be damaged." He shakes his head, sighing. "No, they will show no mercy, and if you seek to protect this woman, it will be to his further detriment. However, it is within my purview to see that this woman is dealt with, should you suspect your nephew and Lord Cygony might have been unduly influenced by magical abilities secretly manifested by Lady Dianna Lomasa." Markus Kahar arches a brow, "... and, when the Shadowscourges investigate Dianna and find that she has no Shadowtouch? With all due respect, my good Hawk, I cannot lie to the Church. If they wish to investigate her I would support that, however I have no reason to suspect it. I believe she would be clean from it, were they to do... whatever the Lightmaidens do... to root it out. But this is the truth as I know it. It shames House Kahar and the Emperor, however, it would shame him more for his own cousin to lie to save the reputation of his family." "Were you to allow me to handle this matter, she would never be investigated by the Scourges," the Emperor's Hawk intones ominously. He leans back in his chair, lifts the goblet from the side table and takes a sip. Markus Kahar sighs softly, "... yet she will burn. She is pregnant with childe." Gell Mikin shakes his head. "No. Not burn. We do not burn the Shadow-Touched, my lord. That honor is reserved for the untainted like you and me. No, she would become a Lesser. She would be sent off, a slave in some mine in a distant corner of the realm. Forgotten. Her child could be adopted by a respectable family." Markus Kahar makes a face, taking a long drink of mulled wine. He stares at the rim of the cup for a long moment until the creek of an outside door opening brings his thoughts back to the moment. The servants arriving from Temple. At last he speaks. "Your arguments are convincing. Doubtlessly, it would save Adaer and the reputation of my house and my family. But if I were to tell you that I believe Dianna Lomasa carries the staint of the Shadow, it would all be built on a lie. There has been enough untruths. I would like to believe that my generation still has some honour left." The Emperor's Hawk sets his goblet on the side table. Then he regards Markus Kahar once more. "Your steadfast devotion to honor is admirable, Lord Markus, make no mistake. But know this: You stand at a personal crossroads. To the left, you wash your hands of a troublesome woman and resolve this scandal. On the right, you gamble on the mercy of the Church and your nephew's ability to plead a defenseless case to them. If you choose the path to the left, then, yes, you face the brief sting that may come from an element of self-deception. But if you choose the path on the right, if it does not end well, then you put an unpleasant choice before your Emperor. As you say, it reflects as much on you, what happens in this township. You risk your position. You risk your lands." Markus Kahar dips his face into his goblet as Gell says this, draining the wine to the last drop. Not a good morning to get out of bed. He sets the silver cup down and slumps back into the throne slightly, staring at the fluttering silk banner above. "All very simple, yes. All very easy... but I would have to live... knowing that I sentenced a stupid, but innocent young woman to a life of slavery. That I denied a childe his mother. I would love dearly to be finished with this entire situation. And even as the thought of losing my birthright terrifies me." He stops and looks at Gell, "... and it does." "... both you and I know that I can't do that. If my years on the Aegis taught me anything, it's that the easiest path is rarely the right one to take." Gell Mikin nods. He stands, lacing his fingers together. "As long as you understand that if your family becomes a further liability to the realm, it will be severed as an infected limb to protect the rest of the body." He tilts his head slightly. "But, before I abandon this investigation, I would speak with your nephew. If you will not speak against this woman, then perhaps he will." His eyebrows lift. "Or perhaps I shall conclude that both of you are held under her sway, behaving illogically." Markus Kahar sighs softly, shaking his head. "My nephew is in a coma after a trampling at the racetrack. However, if you'd like to speak to Dianna, I'll have my guardsman fetch her." "In a coma?" Gell Mikin knits his brow. "Most inconvenient." He then sighs, shaking his head. "I will speak with Dianna Lomasa in due course. I shall remain in Vozhdya for the time being. If your nephew awakens, do let me know." Markus Kahar nods, "I will do so, absolutely. You are welcome to stay in my Keep if you'd like, while you're here. I'll have a guest room made up for you. As for Dianna Lomasa, I actually believe one of my Guardsmen have summoned her. They're most likely in the next room, waiting to be chastised, or hung, or drawn-and-quartered. Lucky for her, that's my fate." The Duke feigns a weak smile. "Do not be so sure," Gell Mikin replies, his mouth curling into an almost feral smile. "I have a responsibility to the throne, and by extension to your house. I am not troubled with the same burdensome scruples that hinder your good sense. The Emperor relies on my judgment in these matters, and if *I* determine she is Shadow-Touched, then that will be enough. Your conscience will be clean." He touches the necklace of withered fingers dangling against his chest. "And I shall have new ornamentation." He inclines his head, then says, "Your hospitality is most appreciated. I accept." Markus Kahar nods appreciatively, a smile edging on his face. "You'll have more then that, if you happen to extricate our House from this mess. My eternal gratitude for one. I will attend to the servants immediately. As for the Lady Lomasa-in-waiting?" Shaking his bald head, Gell smiles. "Allow her to squirm a while longer. I am disposed to spend additional time compiling facts and evidence before addressing Lady Dianna specifically on this matter." With that, he strides toward the mastery doors. Markus Kahar rises and bows, "Thank you then, good lord Mikin. I appreciate your assistence. If you need anything further, please summon a servant, or myself if it is pressing. Anything you need can and will be sent for." Gell Mikin nods to Markus, then smiles faintly at Lucius as he walks toward the opening doors of the mastery and steps outside.
