In all actuality it is not included in any of the city's census counts, and itself is an entirely separate census-designated place. In fact, if all the urbanized census-designated places that are boundary less with the city of Houma were to be counted with its population, it would exceed 60,000 residents. The name Houma derives from the Houmas Indian tribe, which is not recognized by the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs.
