Drums are common, but stringed and wind instruments may also be used. In addition to musical performance, a travelling minstrel will also tell stories and relate news to their audiences. In major cities such as Adrilankha, minstrels will often engage different inns, presumably in exchange for money, rather than for food and board, although this may still happen in some cases. Presumably, the "news" a local minstrel tells will often simply be local gossip. An urban minstrel will also often perform in an ensemble with other musicians. Minstrels of great repute, such as Bastrai, may even have a regular group of backup musicians. Most (if not all) minstrels will belong to the Minstrel's Guild, which presumably looks out for the minstrel's interests when they have a grievance with an innkeeper.

Minstrels enjoy the advantage of guaranteed bed, board, and spending money, though in return they are expected to produce words and music as the patron demands (and some find the task of composing odes on the beauty of their patron's spectacularly-plain spouse interferes unduly with their artistic freedom). Though the life can hardly be described as hard, many Minstrels find themselves forced to become adventurers, having left their employment rather hurriedly following indiscretions with members of the family. Elven Minstrels tend to lead the wandering life out of preference; their temperament does not suit them to working for a Human master and many hold to the opinion that mere Humans cannot properly appreciate their art anyway.

Minstrels are the best group healers in LOTRO and this is their primary function in groups. Minstrels can also do a decent amount of dps when traited for it but are usually called to heal.
