Mi a titka a „szerelmes vámpíros” típusú filmek elsöprő nézettségének? Nem gondoljuk, hogy az egyszerű alapsztori – jóképű vámpírfiú beleszeret a csini halandó lányba – elegendő lenne egy ilyen méretű sikersorozathoz, az okok biztosan mélyebben keresendők. Mivel képzettségünk nem szociológiai vagy pszichológiai, csak a felszínt tudjuk kaparászni. Biztosan meghúzódik a háttérben eredendő félelmünk a sötétség bizarr alakjaitól, ősi borzongásunk a megmagyarázhatatlan másságtól, különösen akkor, ha úgy láttatjuk, ez a zabolázhatatlan erő mégis megszelídíthető, kedvünkre formálható. Mert mi csábítóbb annál, mint abba beleképzelünk, hogy mi, egymagunkban, pusztán hódító személyiségünk folytán legyűrjük a pokol legvadabb teremtményeit? A True Blood egy ilyen sikeres „természetátalakítás” története. Amerika délvidékén járunk, Louisianában, ahol egy kicsit megállt az idő, ahol még most sem hiszik el teljesen, hogy Dél veszített Észak ellen. Időpont a jelen vagy az abszolút közeli jövő (mondjuk a jövő hónap), mely egy dologban különbözik napjainktól, hogy a japánok kifejlesztettek egy olyan készítményt, amely tökéletesen pótolni tudja az emberi vért. Erre az örvendetes hírre előbújtak koporsóikból a vámpírok, kik évezredek óta sikeresen lappangtak közöttünk, de táplálkozási szokásaik ilyetén örvendetes javulása miatt már felvállalhatják mivoltukat. Főszereplőnk egy 25 éves pincérlány, Sookie Stackhouse. Sookie nem hétköznapi figura (mint ahogy a film szinte egyik figurája se), mivel simán hallja az emberek gondolatait. Közbe-közbe bepillantást nyerünk a vámpírok bonyolult társadalmi életébe és „szokásaiba”, megtudjuk, hogy a napsütéstől szétfolynak (és nem csillogni kezdenek), látszódnak a tükörben, nem félnek a fokhagymától, teljesen halottak és pokoli erő lakik bennünk, ahogy eddig is gondoltuk. Ha úgy érezzük, hogy a történet összecseng az Alkonyattal, az nem Harris hibája, ő volt korábban és nem Meyer. A True Blood kitűnően megírt figurák tucatjaival büszkélkedhet. A sok szálon futó cselekményben Sookie románca mellett központi szerepet kap az afro-amerikai Tara botladozása (ő a könyvnek csak mellékfigurája, de nagyon jó, hogy most közelebbről is megismerkedhetünk vele, mert szeretnivaló lány), Sookie bonviván (vagy inkább Casanova) testvére, Jason, az étteremtulajdonos és mellesleg kutya-alakváltó Sam, az étterem meleg szakácsa Lafayette – ő (eddig) embernek tűnik és érdekessége, hogy a könyvsorozatnak a legelején meghal, míg a filmben szerencsére vígan él, mivel nagyon eredeti figura. A színészek otthon vannak e fura figurákban, különösen a szívünkhöz nőtt az iraki háborútól kissé megbuggyant segéd-szakács, Terry (Todd Lowe), Tara súlyosan alkoholista anyja (Adina Porter) és a két korlátolt rendőr (Chris Bauer és William Sanderson). A Sookiet játszó Anna Paquin olyan, amilyennek lenni kell, üde, mint egy tál articsóka. Máskülönben, ha a sorozat továbbra is híven követi a regényt, Billt lassacskán kiírják a képernyőről, mivel a csapodár menyecske új vámpírok (alakváltók, boszorkányok, vérfarkasok stb.) felé verdesi bociszemei pilláit.
