  • The simurgh is the modern Persian name for a fabulous, benevolent, mythical flying creature. The simorgh is depicted in Iranian art as a winged creature in the shape of a bird, gigantic enough to carry off an elephant or a whale. It appears as a kind of peacock with the head of a dog and the claws of a lion; sometimes however also with a human face. The simorgh is inherently benevolent and unambiguously female. Being part mammal, she suckles her young. The Simorgh has teeth. It has an enmity towards snakes and its natural habitat is a place with plenty of water. Its feathers are said to be the colour of copper, and though it was originally described as being a Dog-Bird, later it was shown with either the head of a man or a dog.

As a full round action, you can target a 60 foot area and cause it to become rough terrain, creatures in this area take 4d6 fire damage every round. Finally you can end this technique as a full round action and deal normal damage as well as an additional 1d6 damage per level (Max 20d6) in a 60 foot burst centered on you. Creatures gain a reflex saving throw to halve this damage. This technique lasts for 1 round per level.

The Middle Persian term derives in turn from Avestan mərəγō Saēnō "the bird Saēna", originally a raptor, likely an eagle, falcon, or sparrowhawk, as can be deduced from the etymological cognate Sanskrit śyenaḥ ("raptor, eagle, bird of prey") that also appears as a divine figure. Saēna is also a personal name, which is root of the name. The word was also borrowed into Armenian as siramarg ‘peacock’. The most prestigious award given by Fajr International Film Festival, Iran's major annual film festival, is called the Crystal Simorgh, after the mythical creature.

Simurgh makes her home in the tree Haoma and when she leaves the Haoma its seeds are released from its branches, carried by the winds of Vayu-Vata and the rains of Tishtoriya. Known as Sīmīr in Kurdish lore, one folktale has a hero rescue Simurgh's offspring by killing a snake that was crawling up the tree to feed upon them. As a reward, the Simurgh gives him three of her feathers which the hero can use to call her for help by burning them. In Sufi mysticism she is depicted as a metaphor for God. Known as Zumrud in Azeri folklore, she aids Malik Muhammad in his fight against a giant when he saves her children from a dragon.
