Fue escrita por Ken Li y Gary Scott Thompson y producida por Neal H. Moritz y John Pogue. La productora fue Universal Studios y se estrenó en diferentes fechas del año 2001. Es una película que muestra por primera vez al espectador el glamuroso y peligroso mundo de las carreras callejeras, con coches comerciales completamente modificados y mostrando al espectador la posibilidad de realizar acrobacias y competiciones con automóviles normales, a diferencia de los súper deportivos europeos. Así mismo, una descripción de las reuniones en las cuales se ven autos totalmente modificados, con llamativos colores y luces, y guapas mujeres con poca ropa. Esta película es la primera de 6 entregas de la saga Fast & Furious y la trama transcurre en su totalidad en Los Ángeles, aunque posteriormente en la saga los protagonistas por diversos motivos viajan a otras ciudades. Es el comienzo de una interesante saga de películas. La música de esta primera parte esta a cargo principalmente de artistas del rap como Ja Rule, DMX o R. Kelly, entre otros.
