Young Jesse and his mother had to sit at the back of a Bus because they weren't White. Black people weren't allowed to drink from the same drinking fountains as white people and there were very many more humiliations under Jim Crow laws. Young Jesse's School was worse than the school where white Kids went. The playground was just sand and after Rain the sand became red dirt. Despite worse schooling than white kids Jackson qualified for the University of Illinois but later transferred for a different college. After getting a degree in Sociology Jackson started studying to become a pastor but left to work full time in social activism and promoting civil rights.
