  • There have been several types of vessels referred to as a "Bird-of-Prey". Although the term was apparently originally a Romulan name, it was also adapted by the Klingons. The Bird-of-Prey was the Romulan equivalent of an escort. They were not heavily armed, instead they specialised in surprise attacks by decloaking, attacking, recloaking and retreating before the enemy can respond. (Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 5: Starships of the Romulan Star Empire)
  • A Bird-of-Prey is a starship classification for smaller warships, usually resembling a predatory bird. The Klingon Empire and Romulan Star Empire were known for implementing bird-of-prey type starships. The Bird-of-Prey served the combat role of a skirmisher, operating solo or in small groups as a scout, or making hit-and-run attacks on enemy positions. In larger fleet engagements it screened the vulnerable flanks of larger vessels such as battle cruisers. In this respect they were similar to Starfleet escorts.
  • Bird-of-prey is the designation for a number of different starship classes used by both the Klingon and Romulan fleets. With hulls decorated with large wings like a bird animal, these vessels are designed for a number of fast flight attack or reconnaissance missions, much like an actual bird of prey.

  • In starship classification, a Bird-of-Prey was a type of smaller warship. Generally they resembled large predatory birds. (TOS: "Balance of Terror" ; TNG: "The Defector" ) Two cultures were known to operate Birds-of-Prey: * Klingon Empire * 22nd century Bird-of-Prey * 23rd century Bird-of-Prey * 24th century Bird-of-Prey * Romulan Star Empire * 22nd century Bird-of-Prey * 23rd century Bird-of-Prey The first "Bird-of-Prey" seen was in TOS: "Balance of Terror" and was of the Romulan variety. As originally conceived, the Klingon variant of the Bird-of-Prey was actually a Romulan ship; the script of Star Trek III at first called for the film's main villains to be Romulans using a Romulan Bird-of-Prey, as had been typical of Bird-of-Prey use in Star Trek: The Original Series. In the chronology of the Star Trek universe, the term "Bird-of-Prey" was first referenced on Enterprise in "Sleeping Dogs" , and may have been implied to be the "two ships approaching at high warp" at the end of that episode. An earlier reference made in "Broken Bow" to "a fleet of warbirds" was mentioned by Brannon Braga as a mistake, implying that the production team only wished Romulan ships to be identified as warbirds. In the game Star Trek: Legacy, the Bird-of-Prey is available as a ship for the player to control.
