  • Alloys of terbium are often exhibit magnetostriction, or a change of shape in different magnetic fields. An alloy of terbium, iron, and dysprosium known as Terfenol-D is used in the SoundBug device to turn any solid surface into a speaker. Terbium ions exhibit both strong paramagnetism and bright green fluorescence, and terbium doped phosphors are used in cathode-ray tube televisions to produce green light, along with europium doped phosphors that produce red and blue. Terbium is one of the few rare earths that exhibits multiple air-stable oxidation states.
  • Terbium is used to dope calcium fluoride, calcium tungstate and strontium molybdate, materials that are used in solid-state devices, and as a crystal stabilizer of fuel cells which operate at elevated temperatures. As a component of Terfenol-D (an alloy which expands and contracts in magnetic field more than any other alloy), terbium is of use in actuators in sensors. Terbium oxide is used in green phosphors in fluorescent lamps. Terbium "green" phosphors (which fluoresce a brilliant lemon-yellow) are combined with divalent europium blue phosphors and trivalent europium red phosphors to provide the "trichromatic" lighting technology.
  • Terbium (symbol Tb) is a chemical element, atomic number 65 on the periodic table.
Kategorie:Rohstoffe
  • Terbium is an element, number 65 on the periodic table. (TNG: "Manhunt" )
