  • The Free Cities are those cities along the northwestern coast of the Bitter Sea who retained independence from Kingdom's control after the Keshian province of Bosania was conquered. The cities are Lan, Margrave's Port, Port Natal, Natal and Bordon.
  • The Free Cities or Nine Free Cities are nine independent city-states located in the western part of Essos, the great continent that lies to the east of Westeros. Seven of the cities are coastal or island ports, lying on the Narrow Sea, whilst two others are located inland. Each of the Free Cities controls a certain amount of territory surrounding it, including smaller towns and villages. East of the Free Cities lies the Dothraki Sea. The Free Cities often feast and give tribute to the Dothraki to prevent them from sacking the area.
  • Each of the nine Free Cities has its own unique history and distinctive culture.
  • The Free Cities are city-states that do not belong to anyone but themselves. In well-developed trade, all are given equal rights, and the representatives of all races and nations can come here and sign trade deals. Most cities are connected by a complex system of treaties with neighboring States. In practice, this means that if someone attacks a Free City, the rest will be obliged to come to their aid.
  • The Free Cities were originally a trade alliance of twelve (according to Baruk) to fourteen (based on maps and glossaries) cities located on the continent of Genabackis. Itkovian claimed the independent city-states had been forced into a confederacy of sorts in response to the invasion of the Malazan Empire. At the start of Gardens of the Moon ten of the cities had been conquered by the Malazans with only Pale and Darujhistan left free. With the fall of Pale the alliance effectively ceased to exist.

There are discrepancies between the various maps of Genabackis and not all names listed in Glossaries appear on the maps. Of the following list, eight names are listed within the glossary of Gardens of the Moon (UK MMPB) of which three do not appear on the maps. A further six not named in the Glossary are marked as free cities on the map (UK MMPB GotM). Two cities appear written differently on the coloured version of the maps.
