The museum is on the decommissioned USS Intrepid (CV-11), an air craft carrier from 1943 to 1974, and includes the USS Growler, a Concorde SST, a Lockheed A-12 supersonic reconnaissance plane, and the Space Shuttle Enterprise. The Intrepid was set to be scrapped in 1978, before a developer/philanthropist and a journalist saved it; it became a National Historic Landmark in 1986.
