  • During the era of the Sage of Six Paths, the area now known as the Land of Mountains and its surrounding regions used to be under the control of Kān Shibōhimei and his horde of barbarians, which made their capital settlement in the same cave system over which Kutsugakure was later built. After Kān betrayed the Sage's trust, Hagoromo unleashed his fury in the form of his first tailed beast, Shiniyoku. The beast's birthplace would come to be known as the due to the destruction caused by its searing flames, destruction that extended itself to the barbarians' main settlement, effectively ending Kān's reign of terror on the lands. Shiniyoku would then be sealed into a statue by the Sage himself, grieving over the desolation his creation had unintentionally wrought. After the end of the Warring States Era and advent of hidden villages, Kutsugakure's leadership learned about Shiniyoku and hired the Uzumaki clan to transcribe the seal and beast into one of their own, who then stayed in Kutsugakure as its jinchūriki. The hidden village would later go to participate in the Third Shinobi World War to successfully repel an invasion from the Land of Woods. In the anime, Kagerō Village was a small village that had been at war with Konoha thirty years before the start of the series. Three months after a surprise attack by the Third Hokage, Jiraiya and several other Konoha ninja, they declared a cease-fire. Two weeks later, however, another rival village wiped them out. Only Gennō, who had been in Konoha at the time planting explosive tags for a possible counter-attack, survived its destruction.
