He played for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Calgary Flames. Bernhardt began his career with the Cornwall Royals of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) from 1975 to 1978. He won the Jacques Plante Memorial Trophy (best goaltender) three years in a row from 1975-76 through 1977-78. From 1983 to 1990, Bernhardt split his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the AHL farm club St. Catharines Saints/Newmarket Saints.

He played for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Calgary Flames. Bernhardt began his career with the Cornwall Royals of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) from 1975 to 1978. He won the Jacques Plante Memorial Trophy (best goaltender) three years in a row from 1975-76 through 1977-78. From 1978 to 1983 he played for several CHL teams (Tulsa Oilers, Birmingham Bulls, Oklahoma City Stars and the Colorado Flames. Prior to joining Calgary, Bernhardt played with the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League. From 1983 to 1990, Bernhardt split his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the AHL farm club St. Catharines Saints/Newmarket Saints. Bernhardt played for Canada during the World Junior Championships in 1977–1978. After retirement he worked as a scout for the Dallas Stars.
