Die Barrikaden lösen sich vor meinen Augen in nichts auf, meine Worte werden nie gehört, Dinge tauchen dort wieder auf, wo ich sie her habe, und Marvin steht eine Millisekunde wieder inmitten dieses verdammten Scheißteiles. Telefone, Radios und Feueralarme funktionieren nicht. Alle Computer sind eingefroren. Ich habe eine schlechte Romanze in Claras unterster Schublade gefunden, aber ich weiß, wie sie endet. Schließlich habe ich den Mist mindestens 30 Mal gelesen. Ich kann nicht schlafen, und obwohl mein Körper weder Hunger noch Durst verspürt werde ich immer müder. Mein Gähnen ist beinahe zu meinem Atmen geworden. Und sobald ich die Treppen nehme, bin ich erst recht dem Wahnsinn ausgesetzt, der mich immer weiter befällt, und jeden rationalen Gedanken stoppt, bevor er mich irgendwie beruhigen kann. Denn jede Treppe führt zum dreizehnten Stock. Jede Stufe zum selben Treppenhaus. Jede Tür in dieses beschissene Büro. Obwohl wir uns so hoch oben befanden, hatte ich mir ausgemalt, wie ich aus einem der Fenster hinab in die Freiheit klettern würde, aber egal was ich dagegen werfe, wie sehr ich zerre und versuche, sie zu öffnen - die Fenster öffnen sich nicht. Doch... Natürlich! Natürlich habe ich eine andere Wahl, nicht wahr? Dem Wahnsinn ist sehr leicht zu entkommen, wenn ich doch nur den verdammten Aufzug nehmen würde! So simpel, so einfach! Wahrscheinlich will dieses seltsame Vieh, dass niemand außer mir sehen kann, gar nichts Böses, oder ist nur irgendeine gottverdammte Einbildung, die mir in meiner Übermüdung Streiche spielt. Ich erinnere mich noch daran, als ich einmal eine morbide Neugier empfunden, und mich informiert hatte, wie viele Leute jährlich bei Aufzugunfällen draufgingen. Und es waren gerade einmal Fünf. Fünf Stück im ganzen Land. Es ist 100 Mal wahrscheinlicher, dass man im Treppenhaus verreckt, verdammt, warum also mache ich diesem Dreck hier nicht einfach ein Ende? Und obwohl ich das weiß, möchte ich nicht einsteigen. Denn ich weiß auch, dass jedes Mal, wenn die Türen von diesem Ding sich schließen, ich die immer leiser werdenden schmerzerfüllten Schreie meiner Mitarbeiter höre, die den Schacht hinaufhallen, und kaum mehr menschlich klingen. Ich weiß, dass die seltsamen Geräusche, welche unisono erklingen, sich so anhören, als würden Glieder von Gelenken und Körperteilen getrennt werden; als würde Fleisch auseinanderreißen und Blut die Wände des grauen Aufzuges verfärben. So als würde Marvin seinen letzten Atemzug röcheln, während dieses Vieh, das keine Gestalt hat, ihn langsam verschluckt, und… Ich glaube, ich weiß auch, warum es immer 19:31 bleibt.
