The constellation Scorpius originally had much larger claws, but those claws were removed to form the constellation Libra (see Ophiuchus for more on this matter). The Zodiac sign is said to be associated with eagles, serpents, and Phoenixes. Traditionally, people born from October 23 to November 22 are considered Scorpios. Scorpius is Latin for "scorpion". In Greek mythology, the constellation Scorpius represents the giant scorpion, Skorpio (Greek for "scorpion") sent by the Earth goddess Gaia to slay the mighty hunter Orion, who was killing all the animals of the Earth. As such, Orion and Scorpius are constellations which appear on opposite horizons. As one sets, the other rises.
