  • The 1990 Pontiac Excitement 400 was a Winston Cup (now Nextel Cup) event held at Richmond on February 25, 1990. Despite the fact it was the second race of the year, it turned out to be the most critical win of the year. After Mark Martin ran away to victory, NASCAR inspection found that Martin had an illegal carbourator. Martin was penalized 46 points for the infraction, but would eventually lose the championship by 26 markers, clearly an event that cost him the championship. In the championship battle following Richmond, Dale Earnhardt (2nd) took the points lead. Stats
