Het waren in feite cylinders of buisjes met daarin een bewerkte vorm van Ixetal Cilona. Voor de verkoop werden ze in vrolijk gekleurde verpakkingen gestoken. De verkopers werden meestal Slythmongers genoemd. De vloeibare vorm van de drug werd meestal ingenomen door het te vermengen met een drankje. Het zorgde voor een verhoogd gevoel van euforie, maar lang gebruik kon leiden tot een verkorte levensduur en depressies veroorzaken in perioden waarin de drug niet werd gebruikt. Lang gebruik leidde steevast tot verslavingen, waarin steeds hogere doses nodig waren om een kick te krijgen. Afhankelijk van de sterkte van het Ixetal Cilona extract dat gebruikt werd in de productie, kon de gebruiker na het consumeren van één dosis al verslaafd raken. Death Sticks waren dus zeer verslavend en het kon de dood tot gevolg hebben voor de meeste species. De dood volgde al na een zeer snelle periode van verslaving. Toch kon dit de verslaafden zelden schelen. Het niet innemen van de drug veroorzaakte een depressie waardoor men meer en meer naar de drug begon te verlangen om het gevoel van blijdschap te voelen. Vanwege het wijdverspreidde gebruik van de drug in de laatste jaren van de Old Republic, deed de Bando Gora sekte hoeveelheden neurotoxine in de Death Stick, om op die manier paniek en chaos te veroorzaken. Jaren later kwam de productie van Death Sticks tot stilstand, toen gehele oogsten van de Balo Mushroom (de bron van Ixetal cilona) op Balosar verontreinigd waren met gifstoffen die in de grotten waren gelekt waar de paddestoelen groeiden.
