There is not much wood available on the map, so in later stages of the game, Villagers have to walk across the shallows to gather wood from mangrove trees. • Indonesia was the civilization picked by Duncan during his civilization game against the others. Duncan spawned on one of the many big islands, where he settled his capital near the coast. Duncan was unable to get the Great Library, mostly due to not having any hills or rivers to speed up the production. Duncan would later decide to build another city on a different island, which as Indonesia, would provide him with extra luxuries. Duncan had built his second city on the Orange Islands (named so for their unusual profusion of orange groves), and very close to Tom's English capital. This insult lead to Tom launching a lukewarm assault on Duncan's second city, an early and inauspicious start to the now-infamous Citrus Wars.

The obscurity in most of the West is partly because, until after WW 2, the area was generally known as the East Indies (more precisely, what became Indonesia was the Dutch East Indies, while what became Malaysia was the British East Indies, the Philippines were the Spanish East Indies, and so on). So 'Indonesia' basically seemed to appear out of nowhere. That being said, Indonesia also boasts a whole damn lot of resources around the world. One of the so called Wonders of the World, Borobudur temple, is also located in Indonesia. Unfortunately for the residents, not many in the country seems to be able to manage them well...or to look beyond short-term profits. Indonesia's major religion is Islam- it is in fact the largest Muslim-majority country on Earth. Of course, it is by no means the sole religion- Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism are also prevalent. Interestingly enough, Indonesian Islam (outside of Aceh province) is almost a religion unto itself; while Indonesian Mulsims make the Hajj and pray facing Mecca, most combine Islam with millenia-old indigenous traditions. The Ramayana is performed by Muslim wayang puppeteers, women and men pray in the same room (though not on the same row), and a vast number of Indonesians believe in the ghosts and spirits of their particular ethnic group's folklore. There have been movements in the grassroots to return to a more middle-eastern style of Islam, which is considerably more restrictive, but these don't go over too well with the general public as a whole due to human-rights reasons, not to mention the non-practitioners.
  • THIS PAGE IS CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION. Indonesia, officially the Republic of Indonesia, is a country in Southeast Asia and Oceania. Indonesia is an archipelago comprising approximately 17,508 islands. It has 34 provinces with over 238 million people, and is the world's fourth most populous country. Indonesia is a republic, with an elected legislature and president. The nation's capital city is Jakarta. The country shares land borders with Papua New Guinea, East Timor, and Malaysia. Other neighboring countries include Singapore, Philippines, Australia, Palau, and the Indian territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Indonesia is a founding member of ASEAN and a member of the G-20 major economies. The Indonesian economy is the world's 16th largest by nominal GDP and 15th largest by purchasing power parity. The Indonesian archipelago has been an important trade region since at least the 7th century, when Srivijaya and then later Majapahit traded with China and India. Local rulers gradually absorbed foreign cultural, religious and political models from the early centuries CE, and Hindu and Buddhist kingdoms flourished. Indonesian history has been influenced by foreign powers drawn to its natural resources. Muslim traders brought the now-dominant Islam, while European powers brought Christianity and fought one another to monopolize trade in the Spice Islands of Maluku during the Age of Discovery. Following three and a half centuries of Dutch colonialism, Indonesia secured its independence after World War II. Indonesia's history has since been turbulent, with challenges posed by natural disasters, corruption, separatism, a democratization process, and periods of rapid economic change. Across its many islands, Indonesia consists of hundreds of distinct native ethnic and linguistic groups. The largest – and politically dominant – ethnic group are the Javanese. A shared identity has developed, defined by a national language, ethnic diversity, religious pluralism within a majority Muslim population, and a history of colonialism and rebellion against it. Indonesia's national motto, "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika" ("Unity in Diversity" literally, "many, yet one"), articulates the diversity that shapes the country. Despite its large population and densely populated regions, Indonesia has vast areas of wilderness that support the world's second highest level of biodiversity. The country has abundant natural resources, yet poverty remains widespread.

  • Indonesia is a very special map. Most of the map is covered with shallows. As a result, almost the entire map is an open battlefield in which land units and warships interact. There is not much wood available on the map, so in later stages of the game, Villagers have to walk across the shallows to gather wood from mangrove trees. Gold and Stone Mines also sit on the shallows.

Large islands consist of coastal plains with mountainous interiors. Situated on the so-called "Ring of Fire" has made Indonesia prone to many earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions, which are particularly violent. One such eruption on the island of Krakatoa in 1883 killed an estimated 35,000 people.
  • Indonesia first participated at the Olympic Games in 1952, and has sent athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic Games since then, except for 1964 and 1980, when they participated in the American-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics. Indonesia has never participated in the Winter Olympic Games. The National Olympic Committee for Indonesia was created in 1946 and recognized in 1952. Indonesian athletes have won a total of 25 medals, almost all in badminton and women's weightlifting. While the country's total of 6 gold medals is lower than Thailand's 7, Indonesia has won the highest number of medals among all Southeast Asian nations with the second highest being Thailand with 21. Archers Lilies Handayani, Nurfitriyana Saiman & Kusuma Wardhani gained the republic's first ever podium finish, a silver medal, in the women's team event at the 1988 Seoul Games. However, Indonesia have won all their gold medals in badminton at the Summer Olympics. Future married couple Susi Susanti and Alan Budikusuma won the nation's first 2 gold medals in the women's and men's singles events respectively at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. It marked the start of Indonesia's gold medal tradition in the next 5 Summer Games. Barcelona 1992 was also the only Games in which Indonesia won 2 gold medals. The last gold medallists were Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan in the men's doubles event of badminton at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

These wars would involve nearly every player, and Duncan would remain in near-constant combat for the entirety of the game. For more information on the Citrus Wars, visit England's page. What is not described on that page is Duncan's expansion of the Indonesian Empire outside of the Orange Islands. As part of an effort to unite the Islands for the first time, Duncan created the city of Medan, north east of the main island. During the Japanese invasion of the Orange Islands, Medan was captured. Duncan's empire was thrown into disarray. Cut off from the Orange Islands, Duncan built Beggarcity Two and Beggarcity Tre to the northeast in an effort to drum up production. Meanwhile, tensions between Smith's Russia and Lewis' Japan continued to rise. Duncan allied with Smith against Lewis in an effort to reclaim the Islands, in the process of which he acquired Lewis' Prawn Tempura. As payment for Smith's involvement in the war, Duncan gave the city over to him. This southern theater of the Citrus Wars would spin off and evolve into the Atomic War, late into which Duncan launched a devastatingly successful surprise attack on the Islands. This halted the Citrus Wars for the second time, but not for long. The Japanese Empire cut the Ottoman-held Donor Island in half, and swept through Russia in a decisive end to the Atomic War. Lewis then turned his war machine towards the Orange Islands, capturing both cities and returning them to England, before finally taking Beggercity One.
  • Grupo de Energías Renovables Aplicadas The principal promoter of solar cooking in Indonesia, a scientist named Herliyani Suharta, is associated with the Technical Implementation Unit Energy Technology Laoratory, BPP Technologi. Good accounts of activities in solar cooking are provided in papers, which Suharta has written in collaboration with her colleagues. The articles describe the Indonesian Sun Cooking Project, sponsored by Earthwatch in the mid-1990s, in which almost 1,000 local participants were trained in a new technology by over a hundred international volunteers from 11 countries. The local participants have in turn become mentors for others in their own communities; an additional 440 cookers were constructed and cooks trained at the time the article was written. A careful analysis of obstacles and constraints was completed as well, and modifications were made to the project to overcome them. While not entirely clear in the article, it appears that workshop participants were initially taught to make box cookers, which are fairly complex to build. The sheer difficulty of construction created a problem for the program. The government was not very interested in the project and provided no support. Shortages of wood for cooking were not present, so immediate need was not a large factor. In response to the analysis, a variety of courses have been followed. A detailed analysis of fuel usage and its cost was done, in order to illustrate the potential savings possible by the use of solar cooking, which turned out to be considerable. At the policy level, an analysis of carbon emissions that could be curtailed was also made. Some of the attempts made to utilize the information for more effective dissemination strategies included community education programs on the energy saving topic and its application at the household level. Another was the creation of a "home based worker" mode of delivering the product and training; the solar oven would be available through micro businesses in "kit" form, then assembled and sold by the potential saleswoman. Micro financing of solar oven purchasing was also suggested. The same group has also done technical work in Indonesia, assessing climatic circumstances carefully and exploring design issues towards enhanced efficiency and lower cost. The Indonesian solar cooking promoter group remains active and committed to this effort. There are other groups working in Indonesia, but less information is available.
