* Carbon monoxide - from the incomplete combustion of carbon-containing compounds.
* Sulphur dioxide - from the combustion of sulphur-containing fossil fuels
* Oxides of nitrogen (e.g. nitrogen dioxide) - from car exhausts
* Lead compounds - from car exhausts These are harmful for buildings (acid rain - see Sulphur dioxide) and health (see asthma). For example, NOx account for the smog in inner city areas.
