- The Los Angeles River is a small stream which flows through Los Angeles. In its lower reaches it is channelized into a concrete flood control channel. Most of the water of the stream is diverted upstream and used by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power for domestic use. Due to an inquiry by a rancher who wanted to fill in dry gulches on his land in the headwaters, the United States Corps of Engineers made a preliminary determination in March, 2008 that the Los Angeles River was not navigable upstream of a couple of miles at its mouth. Strenuous objections were raised to this draft report and it was withdrawn for further consideration. It is thought that a determination that a stream is not navigable might reduce environmental protection, see Clean_Water_Act#Basis_of_federal_jurisdiction.
