Omega was created by Takashi Iizuka and designed and modeled by Nobuhiko Honda at Sonic Team USA. He bears a strong resemblance to another character in the series, E-102 Gamma (a possible design inspiration), who is part of the same robotics production line in the series. In the games, he was created by Doctor Eggman, and is out to destroy him due to lack of respect and want for revenge. Omega is 150cm tall (4ft 11in) and weighs a hefty 1,230.512kg (2712.77lbs) making him the heaviest character in the Sonic series. He has the capital Omega symbol (Ω) painted on the front of his left shoulder, in contrast to all the other E-100s, which had lowercase Greek letters. This may be to show that Omega is the most powerful of Eggman's E-Series (though the original set of E-100s from Sonic Adventure had various Greek symbols), or because the character's designer felt that the capital letter was more noticeable and well-known than the lowercase (ω). Omega has helped Shadow (and to a lesser extent, Rouge) in four Sonic games, and while not being a major character, is popular enough in his own right and has established himself as a main character. Recently, however, he has made less appearances in Sonic games, as he only seems to be in the mainstream canon games, with the exception of Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood which was a spin-off, as a teammate to Shadow and Rouge.

- Omega was made as the 24th and last of Doctor Eggman's E-100 series robots. He was designed by Eggman to prevent the release of Shadow the Hedgehog, and, in case he failed to control Shadow when he is freed. To accomplish this, Eggman sealed him in an abandoned base with Shadow. Being imprisoned infuriated Omega; he decided to prove his status as the most powerful E-Series robot by abandoning his original programming and taking revenge on his creator and the other machines he built. When Rouge the Bat went looking for Eggman's secret treasure in his base, she accidentally reactivated E-123 Omega when she released Shadow from a stasis pod. Mistaking Shadow for an Eggman robot and following his new mission, Omega attempted to take out the hedgehog. However, Rouge broke up the fighting long enough to hear both their stories. He soon teamed up with Rouge and Shadow as the power member of Team Dark. After Omega and his team finally defeat Eggman (Metal Sonic in disguise). Omega then sets about destroying Eggman's Shadow Androids. Later, Omega teams up with the other teams against the Metal Overlord. Omega is last seen during that event with Shadow exchanging looks with him and holding Metal Sonic's deactivated body in his arms. Omega later assists Shadow when he goes into Eggman's Iron Jungle and Lava Shelter bases by teaming up to destroy Eggman's robots, and helps him battle the Egg Breaker and Egg Dealer battle mechs.

- E-123 Omega was the last of the E-Series of Eggman's robots. He was locked up in a room at Dr. Eggman's base, due to his uncontrollable power, and the sole purpose of keeping Shadow safe and in stasis. Rouge went inside to steal Eggman's legendary "secret treasure", but found Omega instead. Shadow was also in that room, found by Eggman after the Space Colony Arc incident. Omega attacked Shadow, but Rouge intervened to break up the battle. The three soon became friends, even though Omega didn't have good feelings for Shadow at the start. Omega's goal was to destroy all of Eggman's other robots for revenge and prove his superiority to them. He possessed a great deal of physical strength and a wide array of weaponry in his arms and torso, mostly gatling guns and explosives. Omega had become one of Shadow's closest friends, which probably explains Shadow's bad attitude. Ultimately, Omega was destroyed by one of Eggman's creations, Mecha Sonic. It should be noted that in the Archie Comics and in the games, Omega was shown capable of possibly defeating Shadow (Sonic Universe 3 and Sonic '06) and considering Shadow's common equivalence to Mecha Sonic, it is a confusion to how Omega was possibly destroyed by Mecha Sonic. It should be noted, however, that Shadow has been shown to be much faster than omega, and Omega's portrayal in the comics are not canon to the game series, and Sonic '06 displayed circumstances that made Shadow's defeat inconclusive, so they may not be valid in concluding Omega's strength in the Series. Sonic '06 was also continuity resetted due to a time paradox that erased the game's events.
