- Der Silverstone Circuit wurde 1948 auf dem Gelände des Royal Airforce Flughafen, RAF Silverstone errichtet. Zunächst wurden nur die Startbahnen verwandt, so bestand der Kurs praktisch nur aus langen Geraden und engen Haarnadelkurven. Mit Start der Formel 1 in Jahre 1950 wurden die Rennen auf die Verbindungsstraßen, die die Start- und Landebahnen umgeben, verlegt. Für die nächsten 35 Jahre wurde dieses Streckenlayout nahezu beibehalten. 1975 wurde eine weitere Schikane eingefügt, um die Geschwindigkeit vor der Woodcote-Kurve zu reduzieren. 1987 kam eine Kuppe vor der Bridge-Kurve hinzu. Zwischen den Formel-1-Grand Prix 1990 und 1991 wurde die Strecke komplett neu gestaltet. Die Landebahnen befinden sich auch heute noch im Infield der Rennstrecke und werden zum Teil noch benutzt.
