  • Hopalong Cassidy was a fictional cowboy created in the early 20th century. When Charles Tucker exchanged his body with a noncorporeal being in 2152, one of the many scenarios he experienced was riding alongside Hopalong Cassidy chasing criminals. (ENT: "The Crossing") The Star Trek Encyclopedia (4th ed., vol. 1, p. 346) described Hopalong Cassidy as a bovine herder and advocate for the downtrodden. This character was created by author Clarence E. Mulford and became popular through his many appearances in Western literature and films.
  • Hopalong Cassidy was a ranch hand on the Bar 20 Ranch in Western Texas, around the time of Billy the Kid (1870s). He walked with a limp, as a result of an injury from a shootout in Albuquerque, New Mexico, when he was young. He received the name "Hopalong" as a result of that limp, but making fun of the limp had resulted in the death of more than one man. Hopalong had a code of honor, but was generally ill tempered. He cursed, smoked, chewed tobacco and was both feared and respected. He has a strong camradderie with his fellow ranch hands on the Bar 20.
