Mosley also had a second career as a stunt arranger under the name "Buddy Windrush" and was a keen fencer. He was a founder member of the Society of British Fight Arrangers. Mosley suffered a heart attack in 1991 after which his role in the show was reduced. He passed away less than six weeks after his character died on screen. Alf's trademark Trilby hat was placed on his coffin at his funeral.
