Aykroyd came up with Ghostbusters after reading an article about quantum physics and parapsychology in the American Society of Psychical Research Journal and then watching movies like Ghostchasers. The device was compact, programmable, and easily transportable. Murray suggested that it could be used to project "ghosts" which they could then remove, for a fee, of course. - The concept of the first film was inspired by Dan Aykroyd's own fascination with the paranormal, and it was conceived by Aykroyd as a vehicle for himself and friend and fellow Saturday Night Live alum John Belushi. Aykroyd came up with Ghostbusters after reading an article about quantum physics and parapsychology in the American Society of Psychical Research Journal and then watching movies like Ghostchasers. Aykroyd thought, "Let's redo one of those old ghost comedies, but let's use the research that's being done today. Even at that time, there was plausible research that could point to a device that could capture ectoplasm or materialization; at least visually." The original story as written by Aykroyd was much more ambitious—and unfocused—than what would be eventually filmed; in Aykroyd's original vision, a group of Ghostbusters would travel through time, space and other dimensions taking on huge ghosts (of which the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man was just one of many). Also, the Ghostbusters wore SWAT-like outfits and used wands instead of Proton Packs to fight the ghosts; Ghostbusters storyboards show them wearing riot squad–type helmets with movable transparent visors. The original draft of the script written by Aykroyd was very large, compared to a "phone book" by director Ivan Reitman. Aykroyd pitched his story to director and producer Reitman, who liked the basic idea but immediately saw the budgetary impossibilities demanded by Aykroyd's first draft. At Reitman's suggestion, the story was given a major overhaul, eventually evolving into the final screenplay which Aykroyd and Harold Ramis hammered out over the course of a few months in a Martha's Vineyard bomb shelter, according to Ramis on the DVD commentary track for the movie. Aykroyd and Ramis initially wrote the script with roles written especially for Belushi, Eddie Murphy and John Candy. However, Belushi died due to a drug overdose during the writing of the screenplay, and neither Murphy nor Candy could commit to the movie due to prior engagements, so Aykroyd and Ramis shifted some of these changes around and polished a basic, yet sci-fi oriented screenplay for their final draft. In addition to Aykroyd's high-concept basic premise and Ramis' skill at grounding the fantasy elements with a realistic setting, the film benefits from Bill Murray's semi-improvisational performance as Peter Venkman, the character initially intended for Belushi. The extent of Murray's improvisation while delivering his lines varies wildly with every re-telling of the making of the film; some say he never even read the script, and improvised so much he deserves a writing credit, while others insist that he only improvised a few lines, and used his deadpan comic delivery to make scripted lines seem spontaneous. With the first DVD release of the film on the 15th anniversary of the original theatrical release, many original concepts of the film were revealed, based on the storyboard artwork: Louis Tully was originally to be a conservative man in a business suit played by comedian Candy, but he was unable to commit to the role. The role was taken by Rick Moranis, portraying Louis as a geek. Gozer was originally going to appear in the form of Ivo Shandor as a slender, unremarkable man in a suit played by Paul Reubens. In the end, the role was played by Yugoslavian model Slavitza Jovan, whose Eastern European accented voice was later dubbed over by Paddi Edwards's. Winston Zeddemore was written with Murphy in mind, but he had to decline the role as he was filming Beverly Hills Cop at the same time. When Murphy had the role, Zeddemore was going to be hired much earlier in the film, and would accompany the trio on their hunt for Slimer at the hotel and be slimed in place of Venkman. When Ernie Hudson took over, it was decided that he be brought in later to indicate how the Ghostbusters were struggling to keep up with the outbreak of ghosts. In order to properly light the set for Gozer's temple and create the physical effects for the set, other stages needed to be shut down and all their power diverted over to the set. The hallway sets for the Sedgewick Hotel were originally built for the movie Rich and Famous in 1981 and patterned after the Algonquin Hotel in New York City, where Reitman originally wanted to do the hotel bust. The Biltmore Hotel was chosen because the large lobby allowed for a tracking shot of the Ghostbusters in complete gear for the first time. Dana Barrett and Louis Tully's apartments were constructed across two stages and were actually on the other side of their doors in the hallway, an unusual move in film-making. A problem arose during filming when it was discovered that a show was produced in 1975 by Filmation for CBS called The Ghost Busters. Columbia Pictures prepared a list of alternative names in the event the rights could not be secured, but during the filming of the crowd for the final battle, the extras were all chanting "Ghostbusters", which inspired the producers to insist that the studio buy the rights to the name. For the test screening of Ghostbusters, half of the ghost effects were missing, not yet having been completed by the production team. The audience response was still enthusiastic, and the ghost elements were completed for the official theatrical release shortly thereafter.

- "Ghostbusters" is a song by Ray Parker Jr. which was the theme song for the movie starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson and Sigourney Weaver. Parker's song was chosen after 60 others were rejected. Parker had to get pretty creative with this, as writing a song with the word "Ghostbusters" in it is quite challenging. In an interview with George Cole, author of The Last Miles: The Music of Miles Davis, 1980-1991, Parker said: "It sounds easy now because you've heard the song. But if somebody told you to write a song with the word "Ghostbusters" in it, it's pretty difficult. That was the hard part - getting the title in the song." Parker added that he got his girlfriend and her friends to shout the title for the chorus, since he didn't want to sing it. Parker, who was a renowned session musician, played most of the instruments on the track. Huey Lewis sued Parker for plagiarizing the medley to his song "I Want a New Drug" on this. They settled out of court and agreed not to talk about the case in public. In 2001, Lewis talked about the case in public when he revealed that Parker paid to settle the suit on an episode of VH1's Behind The Music. Parker then sued Lewis for violating the terms of their agreement. The video featured short appearances by a bunch of random celebrities, including George Wendt, Carly Simon, and John Candy. Bobby Brown did the theme song for Ghostbusters 2. It was called "On Our Own." This was nominated for an Oscar for Best Song From A Movie. It lost to "I Just Called To Say I Love You" by Stevie Wonder. This was used in the 2008 movie Be Kind Rewind in a scene where the main characters re-create the Ghostbusters movie.

Tom replies that they would call their insurance company, calling her response stupid. In "Road to Rupert", Lois opens the refrigerator and tells Peter to get out, he replies that he is not Peter, he is Zuul. The DVD commentary for "Yug Ylimaf" indicates that the burst of light through the Griffin's roof is inspired by a combination of Ghostbusters and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Peter thinks the Ecto-1 car is at the hospital in "Vestigial Peter". To put Brian's death behind them in "Life of Brian", Peter suggests getting Ghostbuster jumpsuits with their names on them. During the song "Come On Home" in "Candy Quahog Marshmallow!", a large marshmallow figure is intended to evoke the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters.
- The scheme known as "the GhostBusters" was started in New York City in 1984 by a homosexual shyster and convicted con artist named Bill Murray and his accomplices "Steely" Dan Aykroyd and failed stage magician "Old Weird" Harold Ramis after they, which is to say, Harold, accidentally discovered a means of projecting holographic images via laser refraction. The device was compact, programmable, and easily transportable. Murray suggested that it could be used to project "ghosts" which they could then remove, for a fee, of course. Aykroyd, the mechanic of the group, developed designs for "advanced equipment" that would allow them to "capture" and "contain" these ghosts. They then went into business (enlisting the aid of safe cracker and recent parolee Ernie Hudson, who became the 4th "Ghostbuster") and embarked on the greatest hoax ever perpetrated against the state of New York. Bill, Dan, Harold, and Ernie captured and "disposed of" over 57 "ghosts" and swindled an estimated $247K from various establishments and home-owners in a span of four weeks. This fraud went largely uncontested, until a well-meaning EPA agent unwittingly released vast concentrated doses of the hallucinogenic gas the "Ghostbusters" had been storing in their basement over a two hundred block radius, sending the city into a panic. Then, using a combination of the holograms, $3K worth of stage pyrotechnics, and fifty metric tons of melted marshmallow, the four miraculously escaped capture and hightailed it to international waters. By 1989 their finances had dried up. When a frustrated Murray, through former accomplice Ellen Ripley, arranged for a new evil entity known as Vigo the Carpathian (who was actually another accomplice, Dave Weismuller) to "escape from a painting" at a prominent museum, "The Ghostbusters" were, astonishingly enough, asked to reunite and defeat this evil menace, and so they did, making off with an estimated $20K in priceless antiquities and relics, leaving behind only a crude painting of themselves as their final insult to the NYPD. These men are still at large, and considered extremely dangerous. Since the War on Terror, they've been demoted from the FBI's top ten, but are deadly nonetheless. If you have any information regarding their whereabouts, contact the police immediately.

- The Ghostbusters are the ballsiest bunch of ghost-fighting scientists/SNL refugees in the business. Much like Stephen Colbert, they ain't afraid o' no ghost. Once the Ghostbusters have captured those freedom-hating ghoulies with enhanced laser blaster techniques, they detain them indefinitely in a ghost-tank, wherein Habeas Corpus does not apply While you can call them, they are also available via email; However, the line "Who you gonna email?" just didn't jive with the rest of the song, and was omitted. This article is a stub. You can get a Tip of the Hat* from Stephen by adding only truthiness to it.*Tip of the Hat not guaranteed.
- Ghostbusters was a film about an organisation that fought ghosts. When Graham Stevens told Ace that he was of Paranormal Investigations, Ace asked if he meant like Ghostbusters. (PROSE: Cat's Cradle: Witch Mark) When investigating the Ghost Shifts, the Tenth Doctor referenced the theme song when he brought out a device to track them, asking Rose, "Who you gonna call?", to which she replied, "Ghostbusters!" (TV: Army of Ghosts) In Ashen Hill Manor, Clyde Langer wished he had a Proton Pack from the movie while trying to find a ghostly entity. He also said, "I ain't afraid of no ghost", part of the Ghostbusters' theme tune. (TV: The Eternity Trap) Clara Oswald introduced the Eleventh Doctor and herself to Emma Grayling and Alec Palmer as "Ghostbusters". (TV: Hide) Cass referred to the Twelfth Doctor and Clara Oswald as "ghostbusters". (TV: Under the Lake)
- В 1986 году West End Games выпустила коробочный набор «Ghostbusters: A Frightfully Cheerful Roleplaying Game». В коробку вошли 24-страничное «Учебное руководство» (книга игрока), 64-страничное «Руководство по эксплуатации» (книга мастера) и шесть дайсов. Для первой редакции «Ghostbusters» West End Games выпустила три модуля: «Hot Rods of the Gods» Дэниела Гринбурга (Daniel Greenburg), «Scared Stiffs» Джона М. Билла Славичека и Пола Бальсамо (Paul Balsamo), «Ghostbusters II: The Adventure» Си. Джей. Трамонтана (C.J. Tramontana), «Lurid Tales of Doom» Джонаты Ариадны Каспиан (Jonatha Ariadne Caspian), «Pumpkin Patch Panic» Гранта Бучера (Grant Boucher) и «Tobin’s Spirit Guide» Кима Мохана. Каких-либо последующих официальных изданий по игре не было.
