It is the fourth basilica in Kerala. On November 10. 2008, at the St. Mary's Cathedral, Pattom, Trivandrum, Leonardo Cardinal Sandri, Papal representative and Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, announced the designation of the Queen of Peace Pro-Cathedral in Thiruvananthapuram as a basilica. Major Archbishop Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis Catholicos dedicated the church as the St. Mary, Queen of Peace Basilica on December 7, 2008. Kerala Minister M. Vijaya Kumar presided over a meeting that followed.
