abstract
  • The Neapolitan Republic (Italian: Repubblica Napoletana), also known as the Parthenopean Republic is a democratic republic in Southern Italy, formed a few weeks after the fall of the Repubblica Italiana. After the fall of the Italian Republic and the disappearance of General Junio Borghese, the CLN (Comitato di Liberazione Nazionale) did not at first actively work to re-establish an Italian Unitary state; but after state of lawlessness that lasted for several weeks, a member of the CLN, Francesco Pagano, an ex partisan who fought against the Black Shirts in August 2009, decided to form a provisional government and re-establish rule of law. Republicanism, gained ground, especially among the ex partisans and members of the anti-fascist resistance. On Tuesday, January 8, 2010, the CLN induced Francesco Pagano to declare independence and ask the recognition of the International Community, promising a strong ban against Fascism and authoritarianism. Pagano himself arrived in Naples in the night, where he was enthusiastically received. In other parts of the country, wildest confusion prevailed, supporter of the former fascist regimes massacred numbers of persons suspected of partisan sympathies, while the wealthy and the educated classes, finding themselves abandoned by the Borghese regime, began to contemplate a republic under democratic auspices to avoid anarchy. When the news of independence reached the provinces, lawlessness decreased. At dawn, the newly formed Neapolitan Army, composed entirely by members of the anti-fascist resistance entered Naples.
