Ich will etwas schreiben, meine Finger liegen auf der Tastatur, nur auf die Wörter wartend, die sie tippen sollen, doch in meinem Gehirn herrscht einfach nur leere. Es fühlt sich an, als hätte ich ein weißes Blatt Papier im Kopf. Naja, mich weiter zu bedauern hilft nichts. Für die Inspiration, was bildliche Darstellungen geht, habe ich ja mein kleines Hilfsmittel. Mit einem schnellen Griff speichere ich das Dokument ab, schalte die Schreibtischlampe an und stehe auf. Gott, mir tun die Beine weh. Ich habe viel zu lange gesessen. Und das für lächerliche anderthalb Seiten. Aber das würde sich gleich wieder ändern. Ich verlasse mein Schreibzimmer, durchquere den Flur, den ich mit Postern nur so zugekleistert habe und bewege mich auf die Kellertür zu. Mir wird immer ein wenig mulmig, wenn ich den Keller betreten will. Ich bin inzwischen ein einigermaßen erwachsener Mann, aber meine alten Kindheitsängste werde ich wohl niemals los. Es gibt nun einmal leider Gottes keinen anderen Ort, wo ich mein Hilfsmittel aufbewahren könnte. Mit einem dumpfen quietschen öffne ich die Tür. 'Wie stimmig', denke ich mir und gehe leise lächelnd die Treppe hinunter. Das alte, marode Holz knarzt bei jedem meiner Schritte. Ich erwarte schon seit Ewigkeiten, dass mir die Treppe irgendwann unter den Füßen wegstürzt, aber ich kann sie ja schlecht austauschen lassen. Ich selbst hatte schon in der Schule immer Sechsen in Technik, und ich konnte auch niemanden bezahlen, damit er es für mich tat. Es bestand schließlich die Gefahr, dass er von meinem kleinen Hilfsmittel erfuhr. Schließlich erreiche ich das Ende der Treppe, und damit auch den Lichtschalter links von mir. Ich schaue nicht in die Dunkelheit. Ich will meiner Fantasie gar nicht erst die Chance geben, den Keller mit irgendwelchen Monstern oder Ungeheuern zu füllen. Mit einem leisen Klicken lege ich den Schalter um, und eine einzelne, nackte Glühbirne wirft ihr schwaches Licht auf graue, unbemalte Wände, einen kleinen Tisch aus Edelstahl, wie man ihn vom Zahnarzt kennt, mit einer Reihe verschiedener Messer und anderer scharfer Gegenstände darauf, metallene, verrostete Ketten, die in die Wände eingearbeitet sind, und die blasse, blutverkrustete Haut mitsamt dem Menschen, den sie umschließen. Ich versuche mich zu erinnern, welches Geschlecht mein aktuelles Hilfsmittel doch gleich hatte, doch mir wurde die Überlegung abgenommen, als eine eindeutig weibliche Stimme schwach wimmerte: „Bitte...bitte, nicht wieder...ich werde nichts sagen...lassen sie mich gehen...bitte...“ „Nah, ich glaube nicht das ich dass tun kann. Weißt du, ich brauche dich hier unten. Woher sollte ich sonst meine Inspiration kriegen?“ „Du verdammter, kranker Bastard, lass mich gehen! Ich habe dir nichts getan, du widerwärtiges Arschloch!“ schrie sie und funkelte mich aus trüben, grünen Augen an. Tränen der Wut und Angst standen Ihr im Gesicht. Ich zucke erschrocken zusammen. Ich mag es nicht, wenn Leute laut werden und schreien, und die Kellerwände machten das ganze nicht gerade besser. „Weißt du,“ begann ich, „hier unten wird dich keiner hören. Wenn du also bitte aufhören könntest, so zu schreien...“ „Fick dich!“ schrie sie erneut, und ich zuckte wieder zusammen und presste die Lippen zusammen, um nicht die Beherrschung zu verlieren. „Was willst du von mir?“ wimmerte sie. „Geld? Oder einfach nur meinen Körper?“ Ich öffnete wieder die Augen und trat auf sie zu. Meine Hände bahnten sich automatisch den Weg auf den kleinen Tisch zu, und ich überlegte, was für ein Messer der Mörder in meiner Geschichte verwenden sollte, während ich geistesabwesend antwortete. „In gewisser Weise schon, ja.“ Meine Wahl fiel auf ein Küchenmesser, welches an einer Seite glatt und scharf, an der anderen gerillt war, wie man es normalerweise zum schneiden von Brot verwendet. Ich ziehe langsam und verträumt einen Finger über die glatte Seite der Klinge, wobei ich die Beleidigungen und das Flehen meines Hilfsmittels ausblende. Es sind sowieso immer dieselben Phrasen, die sie mir entgegenschleudern. Ich greife mir noch rasch einen trockenen Lappen vom Tisch, stopfe in der Frau in Mund, packte sie am Handgelenk und drehte sie so, dass sie mir Ihren Oberarm preisgab. „Und jetzt gib Ruhe, ich muss mich hier konzentrieren. Du willst sicher auch nicht, dass ich aus Versehen zu weit schneide, oder?“ Ohne die dumpfen Geräusche, die aus dem Knebel hervordringen, zu beachten, ziehe ich die glatte Seite des Messers über Ihren Oberarm. Eigentlich hätte ich hierfür lieber einen Mann verwendet, da der Mörder in meiner Geschichte schließlich auch ein Mann war, aber ich hatte keine Zeit ein neues Hilfsmittel zu besorgen, und so groß konnte der Unterschied ja schließlich nicht sein. Ich achtete nicht auf Ihre erstickten Schreie, stand auf und beobachtete konzentriert die Wunde, die ich Ihr zugefügt hatte. Ein feines Rinnsal Blut quoll aus der Wunde, wie...wie...wie Saft aus einer überreifen Frucht. Ich klatsche erfreut in die Hände. „Ja! Genau! Das ist perfekt! Wieso bin ich nur nicht eher auf diesen simplen Vergleich gekommen?“ Ich muss über mich selbst lachen, während ich mich wieder der Treppe zuwende. Mein Hilfsmittel schreit mir noch hinterher, doch ich kann sie über mein glucksendes Lachen nicht hören. Unglaublich. So simpel, und doch hatte ich nicht daran gedacht... Ich laufe wieder die knarzende Treppe hinauf, und mit einem erneuten, dumpfen quietschen und einem schweren Schließgeräusch fällt die Tür hinter mir ins Schloss. Ich bewege mich wieder ins Schreibzimmer. Wie gut, dass ich doch noch eine Inspiration gefunden habe. Ich setze mich wieder vor den Monitor und schreibe den Satz auf: "Blut quoll aus der Wunde wie Saft aus einer überreifen Frucht. Der Mann bewegte sich auf sie zu, ließ das Blut von der Klinge tropfen. Dann sprang er schnell auf sie zu und rammte Ihr das Messer in die Seite. Es fühlte sich an, als ob..." ...Das darf doch wohl nicht wahr sein. Nicht schon wieder. Mein Kopf fühlt sich schon wieder so leer an. Ich seufze tief und erhebe mich wieder. And he knows all the rituals, or at least all the real ones. So sometimes he spreads out the information. Ever felt inspired to write some piece of horror that seemed to contain elements that didn’t even exist in your nightmares? Ever had a disturbing idea for some horrible but compelling rite, that seemed to ‘just come to you’? It might have been him working through you. If you get one of those flashes, write it down and post it. I can’t guarantee your health if you don’t - he can be awfully persistent about getting his little messages out, and even if you’re just babbling it to your safe padded walls you’re still saying it. But, at the same time, if you get one of those flashes… halfway through writing it, stop, open up the instant messenger of your choice, and IM yourself. If all you see are your own normal words echoed back at you, give up there. Either it really is just your imagination that gave you the idea, or he doesn’t want to talk. But if the message comes back with odd typos that weren’t there before, or new capitalization, or different punctuation marks… well, I’m sure you’ve seen enough pasta with puzzles in it to know what to do to find the message and respond. If he likes you, or finds you amusing, he’ll talk to you directly there. If he gives you a new puzzle… keep going, but be careful. They get harder and harder, turning from simple wordplay to numerology to esoteric mystical references to God knows what else, but also more and more compelling. It’s harder to just close the window and walk away, and the feeling that you’re just about to reach a solution never eases. And so the next time some poor soul’s found slumped over their computer, killed by starvation and exhaustion and neglect… well, maybe it was just some game, right? But maybe he just wanted to solve that one damn puzzle. If he does greet you directly, you can name three things you desire - any three at all. He will give you, in complete detail, rituals to achieve those three things - if you’re lucky, it will be a single rite that grants all three. They may be dangerous, but they will be clear and detailed paths to gain what you want through paranormal means. But, of course, there are catches. The first: you have to spread the rituals on. You can embellish them as you wish, add your own spin, even lie outright, but you have to leave the goal and most of the steps intact, and you have to put it somewhere where people will see - a forum, a notice board in real life, on the door of a building, wherever. The more popular it is, the happier he will be, and you want his blessing. Because the second catch is that he always omits some key step. As long as you’ve posted the ritual up in public, you will know when the time comes what that step is - but it could be anything from drawing a simple squiggle to murdering your true love in cold blood. You could have to give up your soul, or mutilate a limb, or drown yourself… or you could just have to hop backwards two times. - Can't think of what to draw? Do what I've done, draw a painting or drawing you really like, or draw from a photograph. That's limiting, but there are plenty of images on the internet to explore. Or learn about a new place or subject by reading magazines or books. I found out about two great sources for drawing material, the Gateway of India and Castello Odescalchi. And I learned about these places by reading a magazine. A good artist is always aware that anything that happens to them in a day, or that they randomly learn about, see or think, could become a drawing, or a song, or a joke, and so on. Be aware that we are all constantly being inspired, it just takes the mind of an artist to turn that inspiration into art. Drawing what you like, whether it's birds, skyscrapers or the human form is key to uncovering your inner artistic voice. Show us all why what you like is interesting. The track starts out with seven mysterious whole note piano chords (string chords in the older version). After seven measures, the section ends similarly to the last one, although the harpsicord seems to lose its composure a bit in the sixth measure and finishes with alternating sixteenth notes in the eighth measure.

- A line from Atul’s diary struck a chord – What’s so cool about free software ? . Till now all the activity that has been done across the country (the roadshows, the install fests, the demos and the LinuxAsias) have been based on the premise that FLOSS is cool and the devotees will flock to the temple. When we talk about FLOSS in education, perhaps it is worth a second look towards how we go about it ? Educational institutions are about service delivery. Forgive the crude way of putting it across, but if you strip away all the frills – you get service and the branding that the institutes obtain could be the quality assurance tied in with the delivery of such service. In such a situation, creation of a matrix of FLOSS around the system would be a bit more complex. The current approach revolves around finding a best-fit software tool for the education business process. This includes Institution Management software (school, college, campus), Portal for the institute (along with necessary frills like IM, Single Sign On etc), Laboratory Management Software, Digital Library Information Services Software (Koha for the brave and others for the mere mortals). Is this the right approach ? Perhaps not. This approach or offering is based on what the developer world makes of the requirements and the processes of the academic world. And in a way that could turn out to be dangerously skewed. Till date, at least for India, the developers have not really sat across with the academicians and educators to question them directly on what they want the software to do, how they want it to behave. I guess the time has come for us to do that. Just imagining (or assuming) the requirements and then trying to figure out the best possible pieces of the puzzle that will complete the jigsaw will only see FLOSS lose credibility. This would of course lead to a more streamlined engagement with the developers. Only because we might see the need to develop software in house. Small example, any currently available Learning Management System if deployed directly in an Indian set up would fail to make an impact. Primarily because the course content is not on-line (or even in a state of being able to be ported online) and secondarily because the grading and examination processes are different. Then again we have to consider the need of different education boards in the country. If you notice carefully, we have travelled down a rocky path till now. We began with the assumption that the current way of providing FLOSS for education is not proper and ended up with the real need to motivate developers to create applications or add functionality to existing applications. For example, a software like DrGeo would do pretty well if advanced mathematics modules aimed at standard 10,11 and 12 are added to it. Using that in conjuction with Octave, R and gnuplot would enable the creation of a complete tool set of educational applications for mathematics. And this is exactly what is lacking right now – the means to create modularised education stacks which can be plugged into a FLOSS based educational application framework. One framework for an entire board with modules being added at will to enable it to be re-used. Involving developers and academic world leads to another phenomenon – User Driven Innovation. In case of a education stack based on FLOSS, UDI is the only way to get it going. It will pull in developers of various skillsets interacting with maintainers of existing packages as well as ensure that a proper fit software is developed.
