For many years he was part of Leeds-based comedy act with his three sisters and brother but later branched out into acting and went solo. One of his first credited acting roles was in the John Finch-scripted Granada series Sam in 1973 and he followed this up with roles in several of the BBC's Play for Today 's as well as Open All Hours, Heartbeat and Last of the Summer Wine. On the big screen he had a small part in the highly successful 1996 film Brassed Off.
