abstract
  • In the mirror universe, Samaritan "Sam" Bowers was a Terran male who lived during the 24th century. During the 2360s and 2370s, he was a slave on Klingon-Cardassian Alliance mining colony Korvat. In 2372, an operative of Memory Omega named Tasha Yar arrived on Korvat to deliver a message to Keiko Ishikawa, another Memory Omega agent who had become a slave overseer in 2365. The message, contained in a tattoo on one of Yar's legs, was written in Japanese calligraphy: "Our efforts proceed apace. Rebellion growing in Bajor sector. Proceed with training and liberation. Destination: Terok Nor." Keiko and Yar began training dozens of slaves, including Bowers and Tiron, in combat tactics. Approximately 200 slaves managed to reach the transport bay where Keiko and Yar each piloted one transport, each containing about half of their complement. During the escape attempt, Bowers acted as the tactical officer on Keiko's transport and managed to successfully evade the pursuing Klingon battle cruiser. However, Yar's transport was destroyed with all hands. Bowers, Keiko, Tiron and approximately 100 other slaves arrived safely at Terok Nor and joined the rebellion against the Alliance. In 2376, Bowers was serving as a medic in the station infirmary and, in that capacity, treated Keiko's wounds after she was shot by Tiron, who accused her of continuing to work for the Alliance. However, he remained unaware that Tiron was in actuality another Memory Omega agent and the attack was designed to gain Keiko a much higher position in the Terran Rebellion. The plan succeeded as she soon became the rebel leader Miles "Smiley" O'Brien's first officer as well as his lover. (DS9 - Mirror Universe short story: "A Terrible Beauty") By 2377, he was serving as the flight controller of the Defiant. On that occasion, his piloting skills managed to save the ship from being destroyed by the Cardassian Ninth Order. When he suggested to O'Brien that they return to Terok Nor to look for survivors, O'Brien reflected that he should have known better than to ask that as the Cardassians would have left no survivors when they destroyed the station. However, neither he nor anyone else on the bridge of the Defiant was cold-blooded enough to point that out to him. In 2378, he was one of the many casualties of the Memory Omega led attack on the SoHcha shipyards. Just before his death, O'Brien told him that the attack had succeeded and the Defiant had survived more or less intact. He believed that this knowledge gave Bowers some comfort in his final moments. Prynn Tenmei succeeded him as the Defiant's conn officer. After the victory of the Terran Rebellion later that year, O'Brien mourned Bowers' death. (ST - Mirror Universe novel: Rise Like Lions)
