He was also a U.S. Representative for Kansas from 1961-1969, serving in two different districts. As President, Dole oversaw the end of the Cold War and the continuation of the neoliberal Bush policies, leading his administration to be widely referred to as "the third Bush term." The U.S. economy declined sharply in the early 1990s as he was gearing up for reelection, and he was defeated by Socialist candidate Mario Cuomo.
