Die Trennlinie zwischen Alpha- und Beta-Quadrant ist laut den Referenzwerken so definiert, dass sie genau durch das Sonnensystem verläuft, wodurch sich die Erde sechs Monate pro Jahr im Alpha- und sechs Monate pro Jahr im Beta-Quadranten befinden müsste. Genauso müssten dann alle Planetensysteme die bei der galaktischen Draufsicht „rechts“ von der Sonne liegen, automatisch im Beta-Quadranten liegen. Dies umfasst jedoch auch Sterne wie Wolf 359, Rigel oder Gamma Hydrae deren räumliche Anordnung durch reale astronomische Daten bekannt ist. Das Territorium der Vereinigten Föderation der Planeten befindet sich größtenteils im Alpha-Quadranten und nur ein kleiner Teil im Beta-Quadrant, während sich die Territorien der Klingonen und der Romulaner im Alpha- und auch deutlich im Beta-Quadranten befinden. Im Gamma-Quadranten liegt das Territorium des Dominions und im Delta-Quadranten das der Borg. Es existieren auch noch weitere Quadrantenbezeichnungen, deren Bedeutung unklar ist: Quadrant 448, Quadrant 904 und Morgana-Quadrant. Ein solcher Quadrant ist vermutlich auch gemeint, als Kirk in Star Trek II: Der Zorn des Khan behauptet, die Enterprise sei das einzige Schiff im Quadranten.
