  • Mattingly began drawing and painting as a small child, influenced by comic books, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and a wide array of other artists. After high school, he attended the Colorado Institute of Art at Colorado State University and later transferred to Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. After school, he worked at Walt Disney Studios, ultimately becoming head of the matte department and working on numerous motion pictures. He has produced over five hundred covers for most major publishers of science fiction and fantasy, including Baen Books, Bantam Books, DAW Books, Del Rey Books, Dell, Marvel Comics, Omni, Playboy, Signet, and Tor Books. He created the original cover arts of all Honorverse books starting with Honor Among Enemies, and is their copyright holder. He later painted new covers for the volumes 1 to 5 as well, and his art is now featured on all new releases of the novels. He was unhappy with the way Honor appeared in his original cover art for On Basilisk Station, and changed it with support from Jim Baen. The character Simon Mattingly, one of Honor Harrington's guardsmen, is likely named after him.
