  • Rear Admiral is the second flag officer rank, above Commodore and below Vice Admiral. They may command task forces, major starbases, shipyards, bases on major worlds, or other similar duties.
  • Rear admiral is a flag officer rank used by naval organizations, traditionally below the grade of vice admiral. This rank was used by the Federation Starfleet as well as its predecessor the Earth Starfleet. Some systems instead used two tiers of rear admiral rank, "Rear Admiral, Upper Half" and "Rear Admiral, Lower Half." Officers of the lower half are sometimes called commodores.
  • A Rear Admiral is a naval rank equivalent to Major General in seniority. A Rear Admiral is typically senior to a Commodore and junior to a Vice Admiral. Rear Admirals are addressed by rank and name, thereafter by subordinates as "Sir" or "Ma'am". The rank is usually abbreviated to "RAdm." or "RADM".

During the 24th century, the Federation Starfleet depreciated the commodore grade, replacing it with rear admiral lower half. Also, the Hydran rank of third admiral is roughly equivalent to the Starfleet rank of rear admiral (upper half). • Rear Admiral is the first flag officer rank, above Commander and below Vice Admiral. They may command task forces, major starbases, shipyards, bases on major worlds, or other similar duties. In circumstances where a Rear Admiral is not commanding a station, shipyard or base, they will always be in command of a Battlestar, unless in unusual circumstances. Rear Admirals have the same collar insignia as all other admirals, and are so denoted by the red, brown and white piping on their uniforms.
  • Rear Admiral is the flag officer rank between Commodore and Vice Admiral in the Lexington's fleet. A Rear Admiral would normally be part of High Command, but he can also command his own ship. Some systems other than Starfleet might use two tiers of Rear Admiral ranks, "Rear Admiral upper half" and "Rear Admiral lower half" instead. An officer of the lower half, would be equal in rank to a Commodore.

  • Rear Admiral was a naval rank, usually the lowest level of Admiral in a fleet, and the counterpart to the Army rank of Major General. The next rank up in seniority was Vice Admiral, while the rank below was often Commodore, but in the Imperial Navy, apparently Commander. There is also some evidence for a semi-formal subordinate grade of Brevet-Admirals, necessitated by the vast expansion of military command responsibilities under the Galactic Empire, and later during the Yuuzhan Vong invasion.

(u.a. TNG: ) Ab 2366 ist der auf beiden Seiten des Kragens getragene Admiralsbalken mit zwei eingerahmten Rangpins in Gebrauch (z.B. TNG: ).
  • Rear Admiral is a naval commissioned officer rank above that of a Commodore and Captain, and below that of a Vice Admiral. It is generally regarded as the lowest of the "Admiral" ranks, which are also sometimes referred to as "Flag officers" and/or "Flag ranks". In many navies it is referred to as a two-star rank. It originated from the days of Naval Sailing Squadrons and can trace its origins to the Royal Navy. Each Naval Squadron would be assigned an admiral as its head, who would command from the centre vessel and direct the activities of the squadron. The admiral would in turn be assisted by a vice admiral, who commanded the lead ships which would bear the brunt of a naval battle. In the rear of the Naval Squadron, a third admiral would command the remaining ships and, as this section of the squadron was considered to be in the least danger, the admiral in command of the rear would typically be the most junior of the squadron admirals. This has survived into the modern age, with the rank of rear admiral the most-junior of the admiralty ranks of many navies. In some European navies (e.g., that of France), and in the Canadian Forces French rank translations, the rank of rear admiral is known as counter admiral. In the Royal Netherlands Navy, this rank is known as schout-bij-nacht, (lit.: supervisor during night), denoting the role junior to the squadron admiral, and fleet admiral.

Almost the only Rear-Admiral to be explicitly identified as such in the sources is the Imperial officer Michael Unther, who was promoted to Rear Admiral on retiring from active duty: somewhat bizarrely, he had previously been the commanding Admiral of a Sector Fleet, a statement which is hard to explain unless this had been a brevet posting. An analysis of rank insignia may help identifiy other Rear-Admirals, however - suggesting for example that Delak Krennel held this rank during his mission to Axxila in 4 ABY. Due to the lack of evidence, it is hard to say with confidence what sort of duties Rear Admirals typically undertook in the navies of the Old Republic, Galactic Empire, New Republic and Galactic Alliance. It can be suggested, somewhat tentatively, that officers of this rank may have commanded some individual Star Destroyers, or served as the flag officers for local squadrons and as the commodores of Systems Forces. But given that Admiral Unther was actually promoted to Rear-Admiral from a Sector Fleet command, it is not inconcievable that some Rear Admirals held the senior positions of Fleet Admiral and High Admiral within Sector Groups.

  • Rear admiral was a flag officer rank used by naval organizations, traditionally between the grades of commodore and vice admiral. This rank was used by the Federation Starfleet (as well as its predecessor the Earth Starfleet). Some systems instead used two tiers of rear admiral rank, "rear admiral upper half" and "rear admiral lower half." Officers of the lower half were equal in grade to commodores. In the Earth organization, rear admirals (such as Daniel Leonard) were denoted by two rank insignia enclosed in a rectangular frame, worn on both sides of a uniform jacket. These officers also had a series of rank stripes on their sleeve, a group of four stripes (three in a group, and one separate towards the cuff). (ENT: "Broken Bow") In the subsequent Federation fleets, rear admirals (such as James T. Kirk) were again denoted by sleeve stripes, this time signified by a similar insignia, one solid band of braid, and an additional stripe separate. Rear admiral's shoulder insignia, for epaulet uniforms, was a single eight pointed star. (Star Trek: The Motion Picture) By the Starfleet uniform design of the 2280s, Kirk (and all other officers) wore their insignia as a pin device attached to the shoulder on the jacket clasp. The rear admiral pin was a small round field with four gold arrowheads arranged pointing towards the center, and was accompanied by an embroidered sleeve stripe. (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan) 24th century Starfleet ranks changed the system slightly, deprecating the commodore grade, instead calling officers of that standing "rear admiral lower half." The lower half rear admirals (such as Gregory Quinn and Mark Jameson) wore one triangular admiral braid on their shoulders, while upper half rear admirals wore one triangular braid and one rank pip beneath it (as Savar did). (TNG: "Too Short a Season" , "Conspiracy" ) Another redesign, in the 2360s, made rear admirals (like Starfleet Academy superintendent Brand) denoted by two gold rank pips surrounded by a square frame. (TNG: "The First Duty" ) Presumably, the lower half rear admirals would wear one pip in a flag officer frame. A rear admiral pip from the early seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation was featured as one of many ornaments on the costume of Fennim in VOY: "Think Tank".
