Graves' first seven starts came in 1957, when he finished 43rd in points. Graves debut came at Portland, blowing an engine to finish 23rd and then struggling to 18th at Los Angeles in his next start. But after that, Graves was fantastic. He quickly strung together a series of top-ten finishes, highlighted by a 9th at Bremerton, a 5th at Sacramento and 3rd at Portland. But Graves' highlight certainly came in another event at Sacramento. Graves placed his car on the pole for the September event and then dominated the race in route to victory over track hero Marvin Porter. It was his only career victory. He ended the year with

He ended the year with a 13th at San Jose. Graves' final two races came in 1958. He was very good in qualifying, competing on the outside pole in both events. But the finishes did not come, breaking engine parts to finish 35th at Riverside and 24th at Sacramento.
