It fails when the enemy is at full HP. • Self-Destruct (abbreviated as SD) is when a character is KO'd without being hit by an opponent. This usually equates to a K.O such as jumping off the edge, but falls also count as SDs when the stage KOs someone. In time mode, self-destructs subtract one point by default from a player's score; this penalty can be changed to zero or two points. In bonus mode, the player's score is lowered by 500 points. K.Oing a teammate counts as a Self-Destruct. In Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee, a fall counts as an SD if one of two things happened:

In time mode, self-destruct subtracts one point from the player's current score. Super Smash Flash includes two bonuses: "SDs bonus" which penalyzes -500 points for every self-destruct the player commits, and "Self-Destructor bonus", which penalyzes -2000 when player has a lot of self-destructs.
  • A self-destruct is a mechanism which causes a device to destroy itself. Terminators are not allowed to self-terminate; this allowed humans to capture and reprogram them to fight for the Resistance. As a counter measure, Skynet installed a self-destruct feature for Terminator CPUs when the CPU ports are open or the chips were removed. This is a tamper-proof fail-safe modification to the CPU housings themselves, coating the chip surface in a layer of phosphorus that reacts as an incendiary when exposed to oxygen, which is contained in air.

  • As far as starships, space stations or bases are concerned, a self-destruct mechanism is usually implanted within their power grid, logically consuming a vast amount of the available fuel resources within the main power core(s), in order to provide the most destructive chain reaction possible, in the shortest amount of time. Enemies not in its line of sight are not affected. The D.Va that uses this ability cannot take damage from her own mech. A mech about to self-destruct projects green and white light, and puts a flashing caution sign onto players' UI. It can also be moved through abilities like Reinhardt's Charge.

K.Oing a teammate counts as a Self-Destruct. In Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee, a fall counts as an SD if one of two things happened: * The character was standing on the ground, did not get hit by anything, and fell. * The character was hit and KO'd by a stage hazard. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, however, a SD can only be attained if the KO'd character did not get hit by an opponent during the entire stock. Thusly, a character can be hit by any attack and walk off the edge, yet it does not count as an SD. Even performing a Footstool Jump without dealing damage will not make it count as an SD. It should be noted that, in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, if a character breaks his/her shield and falls down a pit, he/she will be treated as SDing, regardless of the shield being broken by either himself/herself or the opponent, unless the character has been hit before shielding (e.g. a Marth has not been hit by anything and is standing near a ledge when another Marth shows up and charges Shield Breaker. MarthA puts on his shield and MarthB' s Shield Breaker breaks the shield. MarthA is stunned and freefalls leading to a K.O. This counts as MarthA SDing, not MarthB KOing MarthA.) Also, if playing a 1-on-1 match, the person who's get a self-destruct in battle will award the opponent a point and will count as a KO in the results. Moves with high SD risks include Flying Slam and Critical Hit (Marth and Lucina only).

Self-destruct systems are often used by technology using races such as the Terrans and Protoss. While most races try to preserve units and building for as long as possible, the Vaul install such devices in all their technology to prevent capture and leaving witnesses (Mass Effect: Mechs). To avoid harming their own forces, their Plasma shields are set to a frequency to minimize or neutralize the brunt of most explosions.

The first time the Connors encountered this was when Cameron removed Rosie's chip, only for it to self-destruct upon removal. "The Tower Is Tall But the Fall Is Short" Catherine Weaver also encountered the chip self-destruct when she removed the CPU of a Terminator. She discovered that chips were covered with phosphor that inflamed when contacted by air during extraction. "Born to Run"

A mech about to self-destruct projects green and white light, and puts a flashing caution sign onto players' UI. It can also be moved through abilities like Reinhardt's Charge. If D.Va's Boosters are active when activating this ability, the mech will continue to use the boosters as normal, allowing the mech to be thrown before exploding. D.Va may activate Self-Destruct during the one-second delay between her mech being destroyed and being forced to Eject. There is another slight delay between initiating Self-Destruct and when D.Va ejects, during which she can be caught by Reinhardt or Roadhog, and briefly trapped inside. Regardless of whether or not the explosion did any damage, D.Va's out-of-mech ultimate will be instantly refilled when the mech explodes, allowing her to call a new mech. If D.Va's mech in self-destruct mode goes out-of-bounds, it is considered "not successfully exploded" and D.Va will not be given a filled ultimate meter for a new mech. When an enemy D.Va activates Self-Destruct or you activate Self-Destruct, she will shout "Nerf this!". An allied D.Va will say "Activating Self-Destruct sequence!"

Sometimes, it's preceded by a significant build up, resulting into an overload. In the case of starships, most of the time they can be controlled from starships, and triggered once proper verification protocols have been passed successfully, but certain systems allow auxiliary control from remote panels throughout the ship or base. This is a last resort procedure generally used to prevent capture, or to cause as much damage as possible when the ship or base in question is overwhelmed by enemy forces. The resulting effects are generally cataclysmic in regards of the size of the devices.
