  • The Werebear is believed to exist in Skyrim, supposedly as the most common type of lycanthrope in Skyrim. Although they also appear on the island of Solstheim, this could potentially be due to the close proximity of the locations or the date at which the text making such an inference was written in. The idea is derived from the fact that Solstheim previously belonged to Skyrim. During the events of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, luckily no Werebears can be found, as they exist only on Solstheim. In addition to that, the Dragonborn cannot become a Werebear despite their inclusion.
  • All lycanthropes have at least two forms - human and animal. Powerful lycanthropes can also assume a "hybrid" form that is bipedal with animal characteristics. Very powerful lycanthropes can even transform just a part of their body at will (for example, growing claws from their fingertips). Modern lycanthropes are much larger in animal form than their natural counterparts, but the size used to be identical to natural form in ancient strains that are still present in some rare lycanthropes who share the immortality of their vampire masters. Changing between forms requires a great deal of energy. Most lycanthropes must feed immediately after changing to animal form. After returning to human form, lycanthropes usually collapse into a comatose state for several hours, the length of their recuperation depending on their power level. Very powerful lycanthropes do not need to feed immediately and won't collapse, but they are exhausted regardless. An upcoming transformation is preceded by a spike in body temperature. The transformation can be very painful, as bones and flesh reshape, although not fighting the transformation makes it easier. Transformation generates hot, clear fluid that sometimes practically explodes around the transforming lycanthrope, usually leaving themselves clean and dry but covering everything else nearby. The goop is rather hard to wash out if it manages to dry into someone's hair. The lycanthrope will be hungry immediately after transformation, and less powerful individuals may not be entirely in control of themselves until after they feed. Most lycanthropes learn to control their transformations and learn to retain most of their reasoning ability even in the transformed state with practice. Even weak individuals can generally change shape almost at will, although they all must transform with the full moon. Strong emotions, pain, magic, vampiric powers, and mind-altering substances that work on lycanthropes can however erode that control, or even remove it entirely. Lack of control is usually seen as a sign of weakness, so more dominant lycanthropes usually strive especially hard to master their urges. Lycanthropes that simply follow their instincts may command fear, but rarely respect, and they usually end up getting put down by either human authorities (usually with the help of a vampire executioner or a bounty hunter) or other preternatural beings of the area after they become too destructive and disruptive to tolerate. Lycanthropes who spend too much time in animal form may lose their ability to shift back completely. As a result, some of the lycanthropes Anita meets and befriends have fangs, voices, or eyes resembling their animal form even when in human shape. Zeke is an extreme example of this phenomenon, being unable to shift back from his wolfman form in any other part than his eyes. However, it's also possible for a lycanthrope to get stuck in their full animal form. Those individuals usually end up losing their mind and have to be put down. Other, non-lycanthropic shapeshifters may have different forms available, and may experience different effects. For example, Kaspar is able to shift back and forth to his swan form without losing consciousness. It's unclear whether he has an intermediate "swanman" form.

  • There is in existence one kind of actual lycanthrope: the werewolf. Others are mentioned in muggle myths and legend but none exist. Lycanthropy is a disease which can be contracted by bite or scratching by the werewolf during the full moon. Scratches don’t always transmit the disease, even when blood is drawn. A bite will always result in a victim becoming a werewolf, however most people die from the injuries of the attack before that can occur. Lycanthropy cannot be passed onto offspring through birth. No one is born a werewolf, one must be bitten/attacked in order to become one. You cannot contract the disease from blood transfusions. Despite studies and experimentation over centuries there is no known cure for lycanthropy. There is a potion, Wolfsbane potion, which will allow a werewolf to remain in control and consciously aware of themselves, but nothing can stop the shifting. Those who use Wolfsbane longterm may not change until they are in direct moonlight. Barring coming into direct moonlight the change will take place by midnight. Wolfsbane potion, however, is extraordinarily hard to brew and can only be done so correctly by a small percentage of those considered to be Potions Masters. The required ingredients are also very expensive. These two facts make Wolfsbane rare and difficult to acquire while also being rather expensive. Werewolves are magical creatures. Only a wizard can become a werewolf. Muggles die from the attack because their bodies are weaker than those of a wizard and cannot hold up to the strain of attack. The shift into one's wolf form occurs for three consecutive days (that of the full moon, the one preceding and the one proceeding it). Their shift is intensely painful. The pain of the shift is believed to be what drives werewolves mad. They will hunt, ravenous, and kill anything or anyone in their path. Friends, enemies and prey all become one group to the mind of the werewolf. The conscious mind of the person all other times of the year seems to be completely absent during their time as a wolf. The shift into and out of one's wolf form is exhausting and taxing on the system. A werewolf can be distinguished from a regular wolf by the pupils of the eyes, snout shape, and tufted tail. Werewolves suffer from exhaustion extensively. They are unable to perform with their former vigour they possessed when human. Their skin is pale, drawn and worn while their eyes always are tired and have circles/bags. Werewolves are very often cold unless in extreme heat and are physically weak. Their senses (hearing, sight, smell, touch, taste) are diminished from what they were as a human, many of them losing sight and hearing prematurely. Despite wolves being pack animals werewolves are very solitary, sometimes even reclusive, people. They shy away from the public often because of how the public looks down upon them. The only known pack to ever form was orchestrated by Fenrir Greyback. It is assumed werewolves do not band together because of the public reaction to them doing so, though it is possible they simply lack the pack mentality of an actual wolf. The life expectancy of a werewolf is about ten years shorter than that of a muggle. Silver is fatal to werewolves. Just touching it will cause them to die within 24 hours.

In Harmonia, the race has been integrated into the non-human caste where they are little better off than third class citizens. There used to be a Lycanthrope Village (or clan) in the Grasslands, but it was destroyed by the sorceress Windy in her quest for powerful runes. The only known survivor of the devastation was Bob, who fought in the Dunan Unification War. An intriguing case of 'reverse lycanthropy' was noted in the case of Ernst, a boy from the Zelant Kingdom. A Beast Rune was permanently affixed to his forehead in a Sindar ruin; this forced him into the form of a leopard that he can only escape from for limited periods of time. Interestingly, Ernst was able to leave this form during a full moon. What connection, if any, this condition has to true Lycanthropes is currently unknown.
