abstract
  • The objective of the game was to eliminate one of the player's opponents by getting three face shots with any of the ball droids in the arena. The maximum number of ball droids allowed in the arena was always one higher than the number of players in the ring. The minimum was one. A round started when the first ball was fired from a small opening in the middle of an arena, and every player stood around the opening and tried to knock the ball towards themselves. Players had to get the ball by basically any means necessary: by grappling, wrestling or knocking it out of their opponent's grasp. If the ball was free, players often had to barge or throw opponents out of their path to get to it, and all of this was legal. If a player had the ball, they were meant to aim for an opponent's face, but this was often hard as an opponent would protect their face at all costs to avoid being removed from the game. Because of this, the sport often got violent, with competitors using the ball(s) to hit their opponent's stomach and neck. The only illegal moves were breaking bones, biting, gouging and using weapons other than the ball.
