El guion original fue escrito por Quentin Tarantino y revisado por Stone, Richard Rutowski y David Veloz. Si bien gran parte del diálogo es lento, como la idea original sugería, las revisiones trasladaron el centro de atención de la historia desde el periodista Wayne Gale (Robert Downey Jr.) a Mickey y Mallory.
