In 1974 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American film Institute, and he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1984 by his friend Ronald Reagan.

  • James Francis Cagney (New York City, 1899 - July 17, Stanfordville, New York, 30 March 1986) was an American filmactor. His parents were of Irish and Norwegian descent. He worked in vaudeville and on Broadwayin the theatre, and when Warner Bros. bought the film rights for the piece in Penny Arcade where he played, they took Cagney and his colleague Joan Blondell from the theatre to the silver screen in sinner's Holiday (1930). Cagney played in many films, and was nicknamed the hard boy by a series of crime films like The Public Enemy (1931), Blonde Crazy (1931) and Hard to Handle (1933).He also played a number of "softer" roles, including Angels with Dirty Faces (1938), an Oscar-winning role in Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942), White Heat (1949) ("Made it, Ma! Top of the world! "), and Mister Roberts (1955). He was one of the founders of the Screen Actors Guild and served as President from 1942-1944. Cagneys's last film role was in the 1981 film Ragtime , the end of a career that included more than 70 films, even though the last had been already in 1961 for RagtimeBilly Wilders , in One, Two, Three. During his absence be Cagney all roles to be able to spend the time to learn to paint (in which he was very good) and maintaining his farm in Stanfordville in New York. In 1974 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American film Institute, and he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1984 by his friend Ronald Reagan. He married in 1922 with the dancer Frances Sergey "Billie" Vernon (1899-1994), they remained 64 years together. They adopted a son, James Cagney, Jr., and a daughter, Cathleen "Casey" Cagney.
