  • James Sears (November 11, 1940 - August 3, 1973) was a NASCAR driver from Rockingham, NC. He competed in six Nextel Cup Series events in his career, earning two top-tens. Sears' debut came in 1967, when he competed at his home track of Rockingham. Starting 29th in the field of forty-four, Sears lost a ball joint early and finished 33rd. He fared no better in his lone 1968 start, trying again to find success at Rockingham. But it was not to be this time, crashing early and finishing 36th. Sears' lone 1969 start came not surprisingly back at Rockingham. Again he found little success, starting 37th in the field of forty-three and finishing 34th after a mid-race engine failure. Luckily, Sears found some success during the 1970 season, recording two top-tens in two starts. He was finally able to run well at Rockingham, starting 23rd in the Spring race and completing most of the laps in route to a 10th place finish. But Sears was even better at Columbia, completing all but seven laps in route to a career-best 7th place finish. Sears' final career race came in 1971, and it was appropriate perhaps that it came back at Rockingham. Starting 36th in the field of forty, Sears lasted just nine laps before another mechanical issue derailed him to 39th.
