abstract
  • The House of Romanov (Russian: Рома́нов, IPA: [rɐˈmanəf]) was the second imperial dynasty, after the Rurik dynasty to rule over Russia, which reigned from 1613 until the abdication of Emperor Nicholas II (muggle world) in 1917, and the death of Empress Anastasia I (wizarding world) in 1967. The direct male line of the Romanovs came to an end when Elizabeth of Russia died in 1762. After a small dynastic crisis, the House of Holstein-Gottorp, a cadet branch of the House of Oldenburg, ascended the throne in 1762 with Peter III, a grandson of Peter I. Though official known as the House of Romanov, the descendants of Peter III and Catherine II are sometimes referred to as Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov. In early 1917, most members of the main Imperial family were murdered by the Bolsheviks. At the time, the dynasty had at least 65 members, and 18 were killed. On the Imperial family, only Anastasia and her grandmother the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna survived, as they were not in Russian territory at the time.
